less than a month until pitchers and catchers, and i find it interesting that we focus on that so intently when it's not like we'll actually be able to see the pitchers and catchers. it's just, like, anything resembling baseball, going on anywhere in the world. i got phoenix built up in my mind like it's two hundred stories tall ( Read more... )

Wow.

First off, I have to admit I was a little distracted (in a good way) because - it's my team!

Mulder has never known unconditional love like this, that all he had to do was wear a uniform and beat Greg Maddux and now these people would die for him.

And sentences like that drive me to distraction as well. Because, man, that's it.

Mulder keeps trying to remember if he even liked Zito that much.

It's funny, considering how I feel about them, but that totally fits.

break this man’s heart. Break it again and again because it’ll grow back in the off-season.

Somehow, over the course of one Mulder/Zito story, you manage to break open so many guys and make us feel vulnerable right along with them.

...I'm still floored you wrote Mulder in red.

i know! it seemed so impossible for so long. and i've got such totally unfair bitterness against him, though it wasn't his fault and i know, but i can't hate billy beane because he's billy beane and somebody's got to take the blame for the pain, you know?

anyway, i'm glad you liked it. and felt it rang true to your boys, because i'm sure i get away with a lot just from all the shit i know about my boys, so it was strange to try and come at it from elsewhere. mainly i was all, st louis. they're tearing down the stadium. the city lives and dies by the team. the first baseman is magic. go! crazy stuff.

somebody's got to take the blame for the pain, you know?

*nods* If you didn't have anyone to put all that emotion on, what would you do with it?

Makes me wonder though, if other people who got sort of introduced to the A's and the Big Three through your writing pick up on that - though I guess you wrote him as a sort of redeemable bastard (he's always redeemable in my mind, though I don't know if he's always meant to be) even before Black Saturday.

ayrdaomei has always found him the least endearing of The Three, which I guess boggles my mind. (Though finding Zito the most endearing is always understandable) But then I'm biased too because he's a Cardinal and he's the only reason I started paying attention to the A's and your writing was because of that. So maybe I'm just the opposite - I have all these unalterable feelings of devotion to the man because of the trade (though since becoming an A's fan, a part of me wishes it never happened, too ( ... )
