That was as hot/angsty as I would have expected Timmy/Zito to be after clinching the division. I especially like how anxious everyone is getting during Wilson's saves, because they're totally like that as a fan, and I can imagine that after one of those, the players just need a little release. Oh man. Timmy's still in love and it's still so cute, and even though I approach Zito primarily from the POV of a Giants fan (though he is hot) after reading this I just want to put Zito on the WS roster as a long reliever in Mota's spot just, well, cause. So he can pitch a few innings and be in the big show and win and be redeemed.

and be redeemed

that doesn't sound like the barry zito i know and hate/love.

but yeah, i totally feel you. we used mota like once in the playoffs until last night when he came in with a nine-run lead to close it out. i mean, zito can hold a nine-run lead (probably), for god's sake. terrible luck, that guy.

anyway, thanks! it is excellent that you liked it.

The way you write Zito and Lincecum-if that's not how they actually are, then it's how they should be. And I'm glad beyond measure that you've written Lincecum post-celebration sex, because anyone who's that wet and sticky and wild-eyed deserves to get laid properly, for sure.

But I mean, it's more than the sex, clearly. It's always interesting for me to read your Zito fics; my experience of watching him, as a Giants fan, is that he's this battle-tested vet who's just kind of there and doesn't pitch very well sometimes and has a perplexing radio show, and I love seeing him through the lens of someone who's witnessed his entire career arc and can put it all into perspective. He's layered and unusual and deeply changed, and I love that juxtaposed with Tim, who's in such a markedly different place in his career and life. And yet they're perfect together. It works.

"Fuck man," Tim whispers, awed. "This thing could go the distance, you know that?"

That pretty much killed me, right there.

and and. oh god i hope we win.

Same.

oh man, barry freakin' zito. obviously i could talk about him for a decade, obviously i already have. 'deeply changed' i think is a perfect thing to say about him--so shaken and removed from where he once was, but still the same basic guy. he's a heartbreaker to be sure, he'll be a heartbreaker when he's eighty.

thanks very much for the note, man.

Cody Ross is most definitely a party gnome.

I cannot believe you namedropped D**dsp*n. My gawd. I gasped out loud. Lock this shit down! Ha ha.

I kind of want to believe that this really happened. Like, not even the Zito/Lincecum stuff, but the parade of A's calling Zito, I want so badly for that to be canon. Because you make me want it! You! I blame you.

It is still so weird reading Barry Zito with a (potentially) (maybe) (fucked up around the edges) happy ending coming from you! But it's nice.

dude! should i be worried about the d*adspin thing? are they going to find me!

and oh man, to be a fly on the wall of zito's smart phone for the past three weeks. it'd probably make me cry, but oh man would it be worth it.

(potentially)(maybe)(fucked up around the edges) happy ending--yeah, that's just about right.

thanks man!

Ha, I dunno how assiduously they google themselves or whatever, I've just been super paranoid about them ever since they discovered baseball fic. STAY OUT OF FANDOM, MAINSTREAM SPORTS BLOGS.

I feel like I should read this 20 more times before I even try to make words about it, because I don't even know where to start. But instead I'm going to just gush at you anyway now. You had my heart broken at this:

It used to be Huddy, you think absently, staring at your feet instead of your first baseman because it has always embarrassed you in a secondhand way, big emotional speeches and all that. Huddy gives a fantastic win-this-fucking-game speech.

HUDDY, OH MY GOD. AND THEN IT JUST KEPT GOING FROM THERE. Because I'm an idiot/never really think ahead about what's coming next in stories, I actually gasped and flailed at every subsequent call from the old teammates. And then this line about Lincecum -

It's been years with this kid, and that ends up being the strangest thing to think.
- that is fucking strange, Tim's such a kid in my mind and probably always will be, and the fact that they actually have a history of some length is just...gah. Also, he absolutely would say "Good times" after sex. THAT KID.

and then -
when you ( ... )

um, amazing comment. thank you so much!

also, goddamn right, freddy sanchez! the other night we noticed for the first time that he hails from hollywood, ca, and since then he is FREDDY FROM HOLLYWOOOOOOD, every time he comes up to bat. love that guy!

this fic was fun to write because i got to bring back all the old favorites, which was both heartwarming (huddy), and kinda calmly depressing (mark mulder, eric chavez). so retro! and zito vaguely bitter but still dangerously overloaded with hope--he kills me every time.

anyway, thanks again! vamos gigantes, as we say in my neighborhood.
