Even in the early morning when the agents and federal employees were still filtering in to the office, FBI headquarters was alive with the hustle and bustle of the beginning of a new day. This morning was no different…except that above the normal shuffle and scurry, there was a distinct cry cutting through the white noise. It was loud, and steady… and unsettling, even for the seasoned agents who’d faced deadlier enemies.
David and Don, Charlie and Larry all stood staring at the tiny infant in the carrier now perched atop Don’s desk. The newborn baby boy was red faced, with tears streaking his tender cheeks…his tiny mouth open as he wailed, crying as only a week old baby could.
Don closed his eyes, wincing against the pain shooting through his ears at the constant noise…wondering for the moment why any one would want to have one of these things. Surely the cry was above the threshold of pain.
As he thought this, he opened his eyes and turned to the man beside him. “David?”
Agent Sinclair’s eyes widened in near panic as he looked back to his boss. “Don’t look at me, man. Why the hell would I know anything about babies?”
“Don’t you have like 5 sisters?” Larry asked, plugging his ears to drown out the sound around him for just a moment.
“Yeah, but I’m the youngest so I never had to take care of any babies,” David answered, taking a step away from the desk as though that would help stop the ringing in his ears.
“Well you know I’m no good…” Don said eye balling Charlie who looked more and more like he was itching for any excuse just to leave.
“Where is Megan when we need her, anyway? She would know what to do,” Charlie scowled, nervously shifting about as his eyes absently scanned the office.
“That’s a pretty sexist thing to say there Eppesy,” Larry contradicted, shifting his jaw to try and ease the pain in his ears.
“There has to be someone around here who knows what to do,” David stated, craning his neck higher to look around the office. Don and Larry and Charlie followed his lead, hoping to catch the eye of any one who might know something about how to make this baby stop crying. But it seemed that every one not directly involved was doing anything they could to avoid that area of the office.
The foursome shifted and turned, praying for any excuse…any way to stop the tortuous sound of the baby crying… and then, every thing got quiet.
A collective sigh of relief resounded through the office as every one in the room closed their eyes, savoring the sudden stillness engulfing them before the foursome turned to discover what had blessed them with the silence.
Four jaws dropped when they turned to see Special Agent Colby Granger cradling the infant against his shoulder, shifting his weight from foot to foot all while he gently shooshed air through his teeth with his lips near the baby’s ear. The bundle gave a tiny hiccup as his sobs ceased and then he clenched his tiny fist against Colby’s shirt, furrowing his little head against the broad shoulder beneath him.
“Any of you geniuses ever consider holding the poor little thing?” Colby softly stated, shaking his head as he looked at the sad lot of brilliance and brawn standing before him. They all averted his gaze for a long moment before one by one they curiously approached.
“You know…he’s kind of cute when he’s not running his mouth,” David nearly whispered for fear of disturbing the peace lying thick in the air.
“Sounds like someone else we know,” Don chuckled looking over Colby’s shoulder to Charlie before he ran a tender finger over the infant’s soft hair.
“What’s this kid doing here anyway?” Colby asked quietly, continuing to shift his weight as he rocked the baby against him.
“He was abandoned at a crime scene early this morning. We’ve been waiting for Child and Family Services but they said it may be tomorrow before they can get here,” David answered, peeking around Colby’s head to get a better look at the now pink face of the baby content against his partner’s shoulder.
Colby started to answer, but the baby gave a sudden movement as his head started rutting around against him. The movement caused the other four to take a sudden step back, holding their breath as though they expected the child to go off like a bomb at any moment.
Colby could only shake his head again as he turned to look at the infant in his arms. The baby’s lips were leaving a trail across his shirt, and Colby couldn’t help but chuckle watching the infant search for what he needed. “You’ll not find one of those on me, kiddo,” he breathed, his lips against the baby’s head.
Charlie and Larry looked at each other, while Don and David stared blankly back at Colby… wondering what on earth their teammate meant by that.
“He’s hungry, you morons,” Colby quipped, rolling his eyes and finding the entire situation completely amusing. Seasoned agents, brilliant physicists, acclaimed mathematicians… and not a one of them had a clue about something as simple as the needs of a baby.
He exhaled his playful disgust at the men surrounding him before he used one strong arm to keep the baby against his shoulder, freeing up his other hand to grab the carrier off of Don’s desk.
“What…what are you doing?” Charlie asked as Colby started to walk away.
“Me and this little guy are going to hang out at my desk… and I’m going to call the pharmacy down the street and have them deliver some bottles, some formula, and some diapers,” Colby answered, his one hand completely encompassing the baby against him.
“One of us…could go get that stuff,” David spoke as though trying to redeem himself after the shameful look Colby had given him.
Colby stopped and turned around. “After this sad display, I’m not sure I’d trust any of you lot with my house plants… let alone figuring out what to give a baby.”
A grin then crossed his lips. “Don’t worry though… I’ll make sure you each get a turn on diaper duty.”
The mortification on each of the faces before him was all the reward he needed before he turned and rounded the corner to his desk.
