Broken. I wrote this alternate ending after the Numb3rs Season 4 premiere. I've taken the canon story from the mentioned spoiler episode(s) and I've woven Callie into the mix. I'd ask for forgiveness, but Callie made me do it...blame her. :)
Disclaimer: If you recognize it, regrettably - it's not mine.
Nothing if not yours, Colbs…she read it again and again. Not in the letter. No. Those were the same words that he had engraved on the inside of the engagement ring she now spun around in her fingers. She took another long deep breath as she leaned against the railing, overlooking the federal plaza before her. Five weeks…for five weeks she wondered. Five weeks she questioned…had anything been real? Had any part of the life they shared meant anything to him at all? And then, there it was…in his own handwriting. She trusted the words. He gained nothing by lying to her now…certainly not after all the risks he took to even send her the letter. He loved her…he loved her from the first moment he’d seen her - standing in the break room, leaning against the counter with her gun on her hip, her badge hanging at her side. She’d been absently chewing on the end of a pencil as she looked at Colby’s file in her hands…her midriff just barely exposed by the t-shirt she wore and the angle she was standing. And then he’d walked in…and spoke for the first time. And that was it…that was the moment her life changed forever.
October 19th…that was the day they were going to be married. It had been five weeks and she’d not had the heart to cancel any of the plans they made together. Then again, it wasn’t quite spring yet in LA. October was still a long time away…so maybe…maybe all along she’d been hopeful - hopeful that this would all just be some nightmare that she’d eventually wake from to find him still in the bed beside her…still moving to cover her body with his to turn off the alarm and wake her in a far more delicious way.
She felt a familiar hand at her shoulder and she turned to see Don offering her an understanding smile as he moved to lean against the rail beside her. “Megan and David are on their way to see Kirkland. He really is an agent from DC and he’s been out here for six weeks…since the same time Colby…” he stopped, not wanting to finish that sentence.
Callie wiped at the tears that stung her eyes before she turned to give Don her full attention. There was something she needed to say…a decision she had made.
“We’ve got to find him, Don. He’s…he’s in trouble. We’ve got to find him. We’ve got to find him and bring him home,” she spoke and for the first time since all this happened, there was resolution in her voice.
If no one else believed him…if no one else felt as she did, she would betray her orders and she would find him herself. But she wanted the team to help her…she wanted Colby’s team to bring him home. He deserved that much.
Don gave her a long look, studying her eyes and wondering exactly what was in her mind. And then he gave her a nod. “We’ll find him, Callie. We’ll find him. And then we’ll make sense of this…”
And before he could say more, his phone rang. It was Megan. They’d found Kirkland…tortured, and dead.
Callie didn’t need to hear to know that things were slowly unraveling. She read it all from Don’s eyes. The news wasn’t good. And somehow she knew…Colby wasn’t just in trouble. He was alone and in trouble. He was alone, she heard herself say again. She’d promised him…she’d promised him he’d never be alone again. Now, more than ever…she needed to find a way to keep that promise. And suddenly, she had an idea. Carter. China. Ships? She needed to talk to Charlie…and before Don even hung up the phone - she was nearly sprinting back into the building. They were going to find Colby. They were going to bring him home…
