Were I not about to leave on vacation (during which I will have unreliable internet access), I would single-mindedly devote the next three weeks to establishing a grassroots movement devoted to defeating every single congressperson and senator that voted for the bailout package. I'm fairly certain that over the next week, there will be assloads of commentary generated simultaneously arguing that McCain is evil for supporting the bailout while Obama is our savior for supporting the bailout. There will also be plenty of commentary saying the opposite. And probably even more commentary saying that people should laud or condemn a specific candidate for voting the way he did, while ignoring that the other candidate voted the exact same way.

We live in a Democracy... we just live in a Democracy of people with incredibly short memory and who are easily manipulated come election time. The up side is that that's less to do with how terrible Americans are and more to do with how terrible humans are.

If your point is that "it's not that our democracy is fundamentally broken, it's that democracy as a concept is fundamentally broken" then I agree 100%.
