newbie question

Hello! So, my wife and I discovered Canasta in one of our game books, and we're totally into it. Obviously we play to two-handed version, but we're stumped about one thing - none of our game books mention it, and I was hoping maybe someone here could answer us ( Read more... )

Well, I think lotsa people play by different rules, but this is what my family does:
If you have all of the requisite canastas you must either discard or go out (or both).
If you are not able to go out (i.e. you don't have enough canastas yet) you have the option to "hold", which means that you keep ONE last card in your hand INSTEAD of dicarding. The next player is not able to pick up the pile.

By these rules, on the case where you only have three cards and they all match, you would have to discard one and keep the pair.

My friends and I play with a "no discard" option if you can meld all but one card, but don't have enough canastas to go out. Canasta on Yahoo!Games also offers this option.
