Remember, you'll need to both have a software region free player (should be easy to find) AND a hardware RPC-1 flash memory hack to get it to work right. That being said, if you can get VLC player to work (or mplayer), I think they can bypass any RPC settings in the hardware and play them directly.
Cracking the drive in your laptop usually involves "flashing" it to disable the native firmware. There are forums and online guides on how to do this (must have the exact model of dvd drive) however there is a good risk of destroying your drive. Additionally, depending upon the model, you may have to NOT update your OS with newer firmware as it'll cause problems or simply re-region your drive.
Personally...I'm too damn chicken to flash the drive in my laptop, but there are plenty of people who have done it successfully.
Actually .. if its just a pc .. you can load an overlay on your DVD drive (assuming it's IDE or SCSI and not a pcmcia or USB drive) and "trick" the hardware. Program from DVDidle.com works about 95% of the time on PC's and about 45% of the time on laptops.
