It's almost been a year since this entry, and my dad comes home from a business trip toting the Wall Street Journal and talking about fanfiction thanks to the lovely article The Weird World of Fan Fiction.
Personally (sorta- online, but we talk a lot, more about non-fandom things), I know an older woman is a CEO and walking the fanfiction->original path. If their exemplification is a sales mgr., doesn't it also say "adults just like you
( ... )
Hahaha...I agree with you. I feel like the fanfic author demographic needs to expand to more than just a couple middle aged women willing to talk about their pastimes...we should have younger people (older teens, I think preteens will also give a wrong impression) and men put in their two cents...after all, femslash is also a thing but they focused more on the slash aspect..
If we have more people to look at then it really will be "people like us" and it will just be as normal as being something like a Gleek or a HP fan...
My parents only vaguely think I write fanfic? I never really told them but I think they partially assumed. My mom yelled at me a couple years ago asking me what i was writing and why i couldn't show her but it's not like I could say "oh yeah it's a shaman king slash fic here read it", but it's gotten better as I grew older.
