election night craziness

May 02, 2011 22:23

It's kind of interesting (and nerve wracking!) to watch election results coming in, even if I can't vote here yet. I don't know a lot about the different political parties in Canada, or the candidates, but it will be cool to learn about all of it, and hopefully I'll be able to participate in the next election.

I miss the cheese shop so hard!

omg ritas! my best friend and I had ritas every spring day when i was a senior in high school. it's one of my favorite memories :)
When I first moved to Rhode Island there weren't any Rita's around. I was devastated. I was so happy when they finally came here...but everyone here is so particular to a local frozen lemonade shop that I can't get anyone to go to rita's with me!

I know, me too! I have seriously been dying for some house dressing for literally years now, and I'm pretty sure that whenever I next make a trip down to Williamsburg, I'm going to eat nothing but Cheese Shop sandwiches, haha.

I have more fun memories of Sno-to-Go than Rita's, and when Rita's came to Williamsburg right before I graduated, I absolutely refused to go there. But when I'm in Jersey, or any other non-Sno-to-Go place, I am all about Rita's. Hopefully you can convince someone to at least TRY Rita's with you!

I've been though williamsburg twice since graduating (once as a lunch stop on the way down to NC) and once for a wedding. cheese shop happened both times.

you know, I'm one of the few WM students who did not like sno-to-go. blasphemy, i know!
I went and ate it, but it didn't do much for me.
I'm from baltimore and we love our snowcones (called snowballs) ..but I don't like it with shaved ice like sno-to-go has. I much prefer a courser ice, which I think might be a baltimore thing.

Ohhhh gotcha! I totally understand having preferences for what you grew up with or are more familiar with. I mainly miss the twelve million flavors Sno-to-Go had, haha.

I must admit that I haven't heard of most of those places! Well, I have heard of Wegmans and Wawa, but I'm not sure what they are. Should go google.

No soft pretzels?! You can probably find a very good recipe on allrecipes.com!

Yeah, some of them are pretty small local businesses, so I wouldn't expect everyone to have heard of them. Wegmans is pretty much the best grocery store in existence, and Wawa is a convenience store that makes awesome subs and mac & cheese. :D

I'm sure I probably could find a recipe, but I don't know if it would be the same. :(

Convenience store mac & cheese? Hmm. I'll have to see it to believe it! ;) No, but seriously, it seems neither of those stores are nearby awww.

Oh no, it is the best. Also, Wawa mac & cheese is actually the same as the Stouffer's mac & cheese you can get in the freezer aisle. So if you've ever eaten that, it's the same, pretty much. Yeah, I am fairly certain that Wawa is only a mid-Atlantic thing, and Wegmans as well. :-/

Dude. WHAT just happened in Canada?

I have never paid attention to Canadian politics before but was having SO much fun following this election:

There was the Vote Compass (apparently I would be NDP/Green depending on how much weight I give to various issues - and I was getting really excited about the predicted NDP surge. Silly me).

There was 308 for Nate Silver-style polling nerdery (it also had a link somewhere about how to be strategic in deciding whether to vote Liberal or NDP).

There was Bloc Quebecois's annoying yet oddly awesome theme song (click the "Theme Musical" - it's called "Parlons nous, parlons Quebec" and it's been stuck in my head for DAYS).

And now the results are in - wow. I think you guys need to implement some sort of run-off system so that splitting between NDP and Liberal doesn't totally screw everything forever. (I have lots of opinions on what's wrong with the American political system too, obviously, so I hope you aren't taking any of this personally). Wow.

I miss Sno-to-Go, Cheese Shop, and WaWa too.

Oh, no, I'm definitely not taking anything personally. I have only the shakiest understanding of Canadian politics and the significance of this election. I mean, what Rob (gammell) said in his comment below, is about what I know and understand of this election. So yeah, I think it'll be really interesting to see how all of this plays out, and I'm hoping to learn a lot more about how it all works before the next election, which hopefully I'll be able to participate in.

Yeah, I gathered that it was a pretty significant shift, so I'll be interested to see how it all plays out, and what changes this will mean for Canada. Hopefully by the time there's another election, I'll be eligible to participate!

Some of the things you miss are also things I miss. Wawa - EPICALLY. Wegmans, yes, but I also enjoy Whole Foods and I have that here. Soft pretzels - they make them in the parks, but they're the big kind that are kinda hard and less enjoyable. They're an acceptable substitute when I'm really missing them though. Bagels - also epically. I make do with Panera or Dunkin' Donuts bagels sometimes, but I can't do it all the time. And you'll probably hate me for saying so, but Saladworks is on my list too.

Haha, nah, I don't hate you for that. To be honest, I sometimes miss Saladworks, because I like the idea of a place you can go and have a wide selection of salads to choose from, and I haven't really found anything like it anywhere.
