Hi again! My husband and I submitted our sponsorship application at the end of August, and I'm currently staying with him in Canada until the end of October. (ETA: Will they notify us when they begin processing it? There's currently no info on his account as to whether or not it's been received, but perhaps that's because they're still working on ( Read more... )

I'll answer your last question first, and say go ahead and request the background check now. I got mine in March of last year, before I submitted my application, which didn't get mailed in until June. It was about a year from the time I mailed it in to the time I got my permanent residence, and there was never any issue with my background check ( ... )

ANY time you leave, and try to re-enter, you run the risk of being denied. Its solely up to the discretion of the immigration officer. Leaving that often and that many times is something you need to decide if its worth the risk. Denying you re-entry can really mess with your application, even applying outside of Canada ( ... )

They will most likely issue you a new record that only allows you however much time left on the original visitor record. i.e. You will have to be out of Canada by Nov. 30th.

So in that case, I should probably go ahead and submit an application for the extension now?* That way, the document I'm leaving with will, if granted, say 'out by Dec 16th', and should they choose to issue me another record, hopefully it will say the same date... Hopefully the NY hotel reservation in Oct (under my husband's name) and the plane ticket for Dec (under my name) will be enough to satisfy them that I plan to leave, but it looks like I'll have to put off my 2013 visits for just a little while... :(

*Nevermind, saw your edit. :)))

As long as you have concrete proof and can satisfy them that you are leaving, and do not plan to overstay 6 months IN Canada, then you should be okay. Always be honest with the border guards but never offer more information than they ask. They don't need back story to every question, just a simple answer, so don't offer more than what they ask.
