Sounds like you're making steps in the right direction, though I'd be wary of any psychiatrist who told me I had "a mountain of issues" -- aren't they supposed to make you feel like you're not crazy?
Actually, no. Understanding that you have a problem that needs working on is the first step to finding a solution. Going there only to be told that everything is fine is likely not going to impress upon one's mind that some effort should be put into changing...
My own opinion, obviously, but I don't think that people who actually have issues and know it will appreciate a dr. telling them they're just blowing things out of proportion or something.
It's the phrasing that I object to, actually. If a professional said that exact phrase to me, I would run the other way. It's different to say "okay, it sounds like you need to work on issues X, Y, and Z," in a way that is constructive. From canadabear's post it sounded like the doctor said exactly that, which sounds super-unprofessional to me and would make me REALLY wary.
She did say exactly that, but it was after she went through a rather thorough summation. It didn't bother me at all, as we had a very good rapport and it wasn't said in an unprofessional manner. Trust me, I can spot a crackpot shrink and she isn't one.
