[Just outside the centre of Camp, in a clear area, Captain Jack Harkness is playing with his sword.

N-no, an actual sword. He's practising a few moves with it; he's not awful, but he's not terribly good, either. It's been a while since he fenced. The sword itself glitters oddly... or maybe that's just the light ( Read more... )

Ah, I think you'll find your grip is slightly off.

I'm not saying it was wrong for you. I mean, I don't know anything about your situation. But for me... I guess in the end, it's too much like running away. I have to go back. I'm going to help put a stop to it, once and for all.

I guess that's a decision you have to make. But there are some things maybe you need to run away from, or they'll destroy your whole life.

I don't want any more people's lives to be ruined because of the things our parents and grandparents have done. And I know I can make a difference, so... if it can bring peace, it's worth it, right?

But... I guess that's true too. [This is an awkward and very manly hand on your shoulder. Like akin to a manhug. Only manlier. Because I am very manly and this is a manly conversation :(.]

If it can bring peace, it's worth it. [claps your own shoulder heartily] But we're here now, so let's not dwell, huh?

Ah, you're right. I was just so surprised to meet someone else from my time... I guess we both got a little caught up in things. I don't think I ever caught your name, sir...?

I'm Captain Jack Harkness. If you do ever want to come talk to me about... any of it... you're quite welcome to, even if you're a bit ahead. Survivors have gotta stick together.

... A captain, huh. Thank you for all your hard work, then. And... thanks for the offer, too. Though I'm not really sure you could call me a survivor. I was lucky-- I lived the majority of my life sheltered from most of it.

Not from that war. I fought in a few others. Kinda hoped it'd make me feel better about running away. Turns out... not so much.

You were lucky, then.

All the same. Thank you anyway. Hard work is still hard work no matter what, right? I'm sure lots of people are grateful.

I'm not proud of it, though. I mean, you can't help the family or class you're born into, but that's no real excuse for ignorance... Franz was always saying stuff like that.

That's why you were sheltered? Your family?

[Nod] You probably won't have heard of them, if you're from thirty years ago... but my family was at the height of the French aristocracy. Father-- he climbed to the very top of the military so that we could have a comfortable life.

Then it's not your fault. He wanted you to be sheltered; he did it for you. [more manly shoulder-clapping.]

... Yeah. He was a great man, no matter what other people will say.

He sounds it. My father made sacrifices for me, too, so I understand.

... Mm. You can't help but admire them, in that sort of situation.

I'm Albert, by the way. Excuse me for not introducing myself earlier, Captain.
