Review of Jane Gardam's Queen of the Tambourine

The reviewer on Library Thing before me called this a "modern twist on The Yellow Wallpaper." I see where that came from, but that doesn't describe the book I read. Yes, our dear Eliza has hallucinations, but she isn't trapped anymore than she chooses to be. The friend who loaned this book to me loved it, and has many odd similarities to Eliza. She's been an FSOs wife, for example. She isn't Eliza, but from knowing her, perhaps I approached this with an insiders angle. Obviously, from looking at the reviews, this book is a different thing to each reader, even more so than most books.
