Chapter 12: Following a trail to the oven

Brad helped Adam close the case and whispered, "Well. You've got yourself a possessive one this time. This should be interesting, given how you like to flirt."

Adam frowned and spat out angrily, "I've never been unfaithful--"

"Oh, don't be disingenuous." Brad shook his head. "You may not dip your wick elsewhere, but you do like to flirt. It's one of your skill sets. There's nothing wrong with that, but I don't think he's going to appreciate the, shall we say, skills you possess in that arena."

"I don't think he's possessive, I think he's protective." Adam shrugged before he picked up the case and set it aside, before returning to sit down next to Brad on the floor while Anoop and Matt shrieked over Grand Theft Auto.

"I think you're wrong. But even if you're right, protective ?" Brad frowned. "That's a fascinating juxtaposition of roles for you. What's next? You're a bottom?"

Adam snorted. "Ha. One's essential nature never changes. And I completely understand that aspect of Kris' nature because we're both protective. Really, what's wrong with that?"

"And you're not possessive? But why is he being protective?" Brad trailed off, then frowned as he caught sight of Gokey watching them with a wrinkled forehead, which was ever so much more attractive than his usual constipated look sans wrinkles. "How heinous are you being treated? I saw the blogs and Kris -- who is clearly not my biggest fan in case you didn't notice it -- felt obliged to warn me away from Gokey, so..."

Adam shook his head. "Yeah, some of it sucks, but... I can focus on the negative or the positive. And the positive is that every week I stay on the show, I get more exposure, which can only help my career."

"I know, I know. But --" Brad prepared to keep arguing when, thankfully, Allen and Cassidy returned, carrying drinks. Good planning and good timing, because he was running out of topics to fight about with Adam. They both stood up.

"Hey, Cassidy..." Adam smiled as he took the drink Kris held out to him. "My jacket. I have an idea."

"Oh sheesh..." Kris groaned, while hiding his smile as he watched Lil cajole Matt and Anoop into playing Rock Band. "He's been talking about this idea for weeks. Ever since-"

"We went into a formal-wear shop. So. I was thinking detachable tails." Adam smiled, proud of himself. "How about that? Detachable!"

Kris flicked his fingers at Adam's hip. "Yeah, right. Like you'd ever take off your.. tail. You're too damn proud of that ... tail."

Cassidy grinned. "You're right, Kris."

Adam shook his head as he watched Gokey stand up and rub his hands on his thighs with that look that said he was sweating with self-righteousness. "That's not true. I can devise a myriad of scenarios in which having a removable extra tail or two or three..."

"I don't even wanna know," Kris said, louder than usual as he saw Danny approaching with a look of happy indignation on his face. No way was Gokey going to ruin this night, Kris decided and said loudly, "Ohmigod, are you talking about butt plugs?"

Cassidy and Brad exchanged surprised glances, then burst into shocked laughter. Gokey frowned and walked away.

Adam held out his hand to his side. "Allen serves --"

"He scores!" Kris slapped Adam's hand. "You're up next time."

"I have no doubt." Adam squeezed Kris' hand as they turned to Allison, who was yelling to them to get in the game.

"Thanks, guys! See ya later!" Kris called out, as he nearly ran down the hall to slam the front door behind Cassidy and Brad, then whirled around and grabbed Adam's hand and tried to pull him down the hall. Whew, he'd almost screwed up the timing with that last minute run back to the room. "Let's go. I have another--"

"How did you arrange this?" Adam asked softly, holding Kris back by gripping his elbow. "We're not supposed to have non-family visitors at the mansion."

"Let's just say that I took a page from your book and learned how to ... work the room." Kris tugged Adam again.

"Let's just say that explanation is wholly inadequate--"

"Isn't wholly inadequate a contradiction--"

"Yeah, it's an oxymoron. Speaking of which..." Adam paused as the doorway was darkened. He sighed. Kris sighed.

"Gokey," they said simultaneously.

"Where are you two going?" Danny asked. "'Cause I wanted to talk to you, Kris."

"No time. We're going to our room to have naaaasty, dirty gay sex," Adam retorted. No way Gokey was going to spoil a great night. "Wanna watch? You could hold the videocamera, because my boy is totally into exhibitionism and wants to post to YouTube and--"

Kris began to choke with laughter and had to stop walking. "Adammmm..." He gasped, bending over and putting his hands on his knees.

"Oh, and look! Kris here is assuming the position, which is so fucking convenient and look! I made a pun and--" Adam paused as Danny's face turned dangerously red and his mouth opened and closed several times, before he spun around and stomped away. "This has been a truly excellent night, Kris."

"It's..." Kris wiped tears from his eyes and once again took Adam's hand and resumed leading down the hall. "If you would stop holding us back, you'd find out it's not over yet."

"Really? We have another opportunity to torture Gokey?" Adam asked eagerly, wondering what Kris was doing now.

"You know he's gonna be up all night stewing over what you said."

"Hey, you gave him a visual." Adam pulled his hand free, then slapped Kris on the ass. "And I didn't mind the view either."

"Hey!" Kris exclaimed as his ass stung from the slap.

"Does it hurt? Do you want me to kiss it all better?" Adam asked teasingly.

"A kiss is apparently the snipe hunt of our relationship," Kris complained.

"Snipe? What's a snipe?" Adam asked curiously. "Is it some animal or a bird or--"

"No, it's a mineral. Oooh boy..." Kris rubbed his hands together. "That's for me to know and you to find out."

"What I'd really like to find out is where we're headed." Adam sighed. "We could be on our way back to our room and continuing -- Wait. Is this where you and Cassidy disappeared earlier tonight when you were pretending to get drinks?" Adam asked as Kris turned a corner.

Kris rolled his eyes. So much for being sneaky. "Yeah. Cassidy was really nice, although..." Kris drawled out the word. "I think it was just a way for him to test me, to see if I was worthy."

"Oh. Some of my friends are... overprotective of me."

"Why?"

"I..." Adam looked away, then nodded and looked back. "You know, one night I told you that I had a bad period after a relationship ended. I didn't get into detail and I won't now, because really the details are irrelevant. But.. Drugs, sex, drugs... It was not, let's say, life-affirming behavior on my part."

"Adam..." Kris whispered, his eyes wide in surprise. Adam always seemed so in control. Heck, he hadn't even punched Gokey and no one would blame him if he did. He'd never even clenched a fist and lord knows, it wasn't as if Adam was passive. Adam was so damn aggressive and focused and one of these days, that intensity was going to be used for ... speaking of which, Adam was talking. Focus, Allen, focus.

"I'm okay and it's never going to happen again --"

"How do you know it's never going to happen again?"

"You have that type of experience and you either bottom out and stay there or you come out stronger."

"Stronger, of course. And.." Kris paused, then went on. "But don't you think part of it is your natural personality? I mean, you're naturally an optimist, am I right?"

"Correct. You... get it."

"I get you, Adam. I always have."

"Amazing..." Adam whispered, staring into Kris' eyes. He shook his head, then looked away, needing to break the connection before he pushed Kris up against the wall and... Speaking of the wall. "Hey, Kris, are you lost again?"

"No!" Kris denied, although he realized he might have taken a wrong turn somewhere. He paused, looking around, then pointed to the left.

"Well, it's nice to know that we share an occasional lack of directional skills. Although yours are confined to the mansion--"

"No one needs a place this big!" Kris argued.

"Oh, I disagree. Imagine the parties! Not that we'll ever have a decent party here."

"Stop whining about your deadly lack of a social life and get back to the story, Lambert. You were screwing around and messing up, remember?" Kris frowned up at Adam. He hated to think of Adam being anything... less than he was right now. Healthy and confident. It actually hurt to think of Adam being in pain. Hurt? What the hell...

"My friends who witnessed it..." Adam sighed. "Mother hens."

"That's what real friends are for, right?" Kris pressed.

"Right. And don't worry, Henny Penny."

"I'm not."

"Liar. You cannot hide a thought from telegraphing across your face. I am capable of learning from my mistakes and won't repeat them." Adam smiled. "And I also learned some positive, useful lessons."

“Let me guess, you're talking about sex? So what did you learn, really?" Kris challenged.

“Really? The first time you played an instrument, I am sure, it didn't create beautiful... music, right --"

"Especially given my lack of exposure to good porn." Kris smiled.

Adam smiled back. "Exactly. So, how did you learn to play the piano or the guitar? Practice right?"

"Well, yeah, but that's different--"

"No, it's not. Sex without experience is --"

"It can be sweet!" God, Kris hoped he didn't disappoint Adam, because, that would just suck.

"It can also suck. And I mean that in a bad way," Adam teased, knowing that there was no way in hell anything other than their mouths was going to suck. "Don't argue with me, I speak from experience!" Adam noted when Kris looked incendiary.

"You've never had bad sex." Kris rolled his eyes at the notion as he realized Adam was teasing him.

"Now, that is sweet." Adam grabbed for Kris' hand and squeezed it, then began to stroke Kris' palm with his thumb as he spoke softly. "If totally untrue. Sex, good sex, is a skill you can learn. Practice makes perfect." Adam looked down at Kris who was shaking his head as he slowed his pace as they approached the theater room. Theater room? Ah ha! Kris must want more...handholding. He was so up for that. "And then there's the critical component of lo--"

"So, what you're saying is that you learned how--" Kris stopped before the closed door and pulled a key out of his pocket.

Adam dropped his voice an octave and said slowly, "I learned how to be a really great fuck.”

Plink

The key crashed to the tiled floor. "WHAT? Stop it, Lambert," Kris mumbled as his fingers fumbled with the key. He stood up and shoved the key toward the lock, scraping it in his impatient frustration.

"Oh, allow me to insert the key into the lock, tab into the slot--"

"Oh, shut up and get inside--"

"An order I'll happily take from you..." Adam raised his eyebrow as he pushed open the door, then stopped. "When we're naked-- Kris? What did you do?"
