Disclaimer: I own neither of these shows, I just like to have fun with the characters.
Kate Beckett didn’t have a natural aversion to lawyers, the same way some other cops did. She knew that lawyers could be useful, handy to have around, and sometimes even…attractive. Alex Cabot was all three.
Alex had strode into the building over two months ago, and announced that she was the new DA assigned to their office. Ryan and Esposito had shared a glance, Ryan shrugging and turning away. He didn’t care for lawyers, but if one had been assigned to them, there wasn’t much he could to about it.
It was Richard’s reaction that irked Kate. His jaw was practically brushing the floor, eyes the size of saucers. She felt the need to punch him in the arm, but that might be considered rude by their new DA, and Kate didn’t want to be accused of violence on the woman’s first day. Maybe let her get to know them a bit before Kate went back to keeping Richard in line. Instead she roughly nudged him on her way past, and he staggered slightly, closing his mouth to glare at her.
“Hi, I’m Detective Kate Beckett,” she said, holding out her hand with a smile. There was no denying the woman was beautiful. Sharp blue eyes seemed to assess Kate before the woman shifted her briefcase to return the handshake.
The woman seemed to hesitate, as if the she wasn’t used to saying the words. “Alex Cabot.”
Richard quickly regained his composure, sidling up beside Kate with a grin. “Richard Castle.” He offered his hand too, and Alex shook it, before she began scanning the office.
“So,” Richard continued, “what brings you to homicide?” He had a gleam in his eye that Kate recognized as the writer part of his brain switching on, no doubt with the idea of introducing a gorgeous lawyer character into his books.
Kate noticed the frown that crept onto Alex’s face.
“I needed a change. To get out of Special Victims.” There was a far-away look in Alex’s eyes, and Kate suspected there was a lot more to the story than the DA was letting on. But Richard seemed satisfied for the moment; before he could ask any more questions, Ryan gestured at them from his desk.
“We caught a case,” he called, holding a hand over the mouth piece of the phone.
Kate turned to Alex, who was still standing quite rigidly. Kate doubted this was a woman who relaxed easily, though that was possibly linked to the story she wasn’t telling them.
“Sorry,” Kate said with a small smile, but Alex just shook her head.
“Go, I’ll be around if you need me. It was nice to meet you, Detective Beckett.”
“Kate.”
Alex met Kate’s with a small one of her own. “Kate, then.”

Kate was right, on both counts. There was more to the story than Alex was telling, and she wasn’t a woman who let her guard down often. It took Kate weeks just to get the DA to go for coffee with her, and she had to do it with the temptation of discussing work (which they didn’t end up doing anyway).
Eventually, Alex began to relax around Kate, even if it was only when they were alone. The first time Kate heard Serious Miss Alex Cabot laugh over dinner she almost fell off her chair. Instead she grinned, glad that Alex was finally beginning to settle in to her new life at Homicide. And it was a new life. Slowly, Alex had let pieces of her story slip, enough that Kate had managed to figure most of it out, even without the advantage of having the police record system at her disposal.
Kate was happy to be a part of helping Alex settle, and was pleased at the way their friendship was going. Though she was still hoping that maybe it could possibly become something more.
“Are you sorry?” Kate asked, one night when they went out for dinner. “That you pushed that case?”
Alex seemed to think about it for a moment, then slowly shook her head. “No, it was still the right thing to do. There was no way I could let him get away with it, and someone had to stand up to him.” She shrugged. “Anyways, I guess in a way, it’s what brought me here. If I hadn’t left SVU to go into protection, I never would have taken the time off. Never would have had to go back.” She paused, pursed her lips. “I never would have realized that that job was slowly eating away at me. I don’t know how the others do it, Eliot and Olivia. But the point is, if I hadn’t pushed that case, I wouldn’t be here, now.” Alex lifted her gaze to meet Kate’s. “And I think that here is a really good place for me to be.”
Kate couldn’t stop the smile that spread on her face, and Alex let out a soft laugh, going back to her dinner and letting Kate mull over the possible meaning of the words.
They kissed that night. Just for a moment, outside the restaurant. Alex hailed a cab, turning back to Kate as one pulled up.
“Thanks, for tonight. As always, it was fun.”
Kate gave a little nod. “Sure, Alex. Any time.” And she wasn’t lying. If Alex ever needed something, Kate would have been more than willing to help, even if it was something as simple as having a meal with a friend.
“I’ll see you tomorrow?” Kate asked, and Alex paused. Before Kate knew what was happening, Alex was pressed lightly against her, lips brushing hers in a light kiss. Alex broke away after a moment, a smile playing on her lips. She took in the slightly stunned look on Kate’s face and blushed.
“And yes, you will see me tomorrow.” She stepped back down off the curb and ducked into the cab, leaving before Kate had a chance to collect herself.

Kate sat at her desk, sipping her coffee as she read the morning paper, her usually unreadable expression on her face. She didn’t hear the silent footsteps approaching from behind.
“Kate’s got a girlfriend.” The singsong voice came in her ear, and she jumped a foot in the air.
“Castle!” Kate scolded, setting down her cup of coffee. “Do you want me to get third degree burns?”
He ignored her, beaming. “Kate’s got a girlfriend.”
“I do not, Castle. Let it go.”
He scoffed, shaking his head. “A little birdie told me you were kissing our DA, Alex at McLaren’s last night.” Kate’s jaw dropped just a little.
“What? How do you know that?”
He looked pretty smug. “I have friends all over this city, Kate. You should know that. And they tell me that you and Alex were having a pretty good time last night.”
She waved a hand, shushing him. “Okay, okay. Not so loud. So we kissed, all right?”
He grinned, that familiar glint coming back to his eyes. Kate held up a finger, trying to stop the thought before it became anything substantial.
“You cannot use that in a book. I will kill you.” The last thing she wanted was her and Alex’s private business laid out in one of his Nikki Heat novels. She didn’t even want to think about the ‘extra’ parts that Richard would no doubt include. She didn’t want him thinking about that either.
It was then that Alex arrived, Richard spotting her from the other side of the room, his giggle giving him away. Kate turned and saw what had caught his attention, rolling her eyes.
“How about I give you two some alone time?” He stood, disappearing before Kate could reprimand him. She made her way over to Alex, who appeared to notice her exasperated look.
“Everything alright?” she asked, glancing over to where Richard was peering through the window from the coffee room. Kate just sighed.
Kate paused, a thought suddenly coming to her. She quickly leaned up and placed a kiss on Alex’s lips. Alex looked slightly surprised, and Kate was glad she was able to get payback from the night before. She could also imagine Richard’s face, his jaw once more on the floor. Kate pulled away, smiling up at Alex.
“Everything’s perfect.”
