No, not too purple. Lyrical. Slightly obscure, but that works for the story.
And the developing image in italics - he's not a boy, you're just old - he's not a boy - but he was never a boy is a perfect description.

Wow, super haunting, but beautiful. Lyrical is a great way to put it. And definitely not purple. ;)
