The first time Gaius went and saw the Great Dragon was the day after he and the Dragonlord had been captured. He made his way down to the very depths of the castle, where he found the cavern in which the dragon had been chained, unable to break free. The beast was standing as if waiting for him.

I should also say (will do an edit in a sec) that i got the idea for light/dark when I read that Ambrosius means Prince of Light

That ep is very interesting, isn't it? Isn't it the case that Edwin doesn't die at the end, and yet he knows Merlin has magic.

I think I missed the reference to Ambrosius, but that is very interesting.

Merlin kills him at the end, as Edwin was going to kill Gaius, but he accused Giaus of reporting his parents to Uther. (doesn't put Gaius in a good light)

The reference was never in the series, but in other books (I think it's in Mary Stewart as well) He is called Myrrddin Emrys, also known as Ambrosius.
