This is painful and made more painful by Merlin believing it was cowardice that led to those choices. I think it was compassion and hope that Mordred and Morgana could also make choices and change their destinies. Neither even tried and that's not down to Merlin.

With Arthur dead, Merlin will still blame himself.

You know Merlin, he blames himself for everything. He takes on all the responsibility for his & Arthur's destiny overlooking the fact that everyone else along the way has had choices too.

People make bad decision all the time, and after watch 5x05 I kind of like the twist ;D Merlin should stick to his first decision, he changed his mind in the middle which muddles everything.

This! I so feel this! Especially the part about Merlin choosing when to and when not to listen. I strongly believe this is the way the canon is heading, which is saddening.

I have to admit that this story was born out of my frustration with how S5 has been playing out. It is indeed saddening.
