It’s very much a defense mechanism. It’s pretty obvious that it’s either magic or a lot of time has passed.

Poor Merlin. Arthur's mistrust is so hurtful, especially after how long he has waited for Arthur's return.

He is freaking out. He’s seeing things that shouldn’t be and it’s either magic or a lot more time has passed than he’s happy with. So he blames Merlin. Thanks.
