I have read so much fanfiction lately that I've become completely exhausted with the language, the phrases, the scenarios, the same ground trodden over and over again.

These 253 words were like a fresh breeze. Absolutely amazing. The emotions are large, but understated, and your chosen imagery (slippery steps, eyes, horned beasts) underscore them.
