This is excellent. Really, really good. I'm going to admit that I didn't read the previous parts yet but the atmosphere in this part alone is captivating. Merlin's realization and Arthur voicing what he's really afraid of is so powerful.

"the marks of his captivity sunk beneath his skin and deep into his bones where not even Merlin’s fervent kisses can coax them out,"
This is very evocative and a great line.

I love this. Arthur so vulnerable and yet not able to tell Merlin what he really fears at first. I loved that Merlin had to find out rather sideways but they were all the more intimate for it. Great job.
