It’s kind of obvious the day after Arthur comes home that he doesn’t really know Merlin that well anymore. The boy he knew at fourteen is almost completely different now he’s all grown up.

“Hey Mum. Arthur.”

Merlin strolled into the kitchen, already dressed-despite the ungodly hour of 8 AM-in a pair of skinny jeans and freshly pressed button up. He nodded absently at the two of them and headed straight for the coffee. Arthur raised an eyebrow as Merlin poured himself a cup and proceeded to drink it black.

“I didn’t know you drank coffee Merls,” he commented lightly. Merlin rolled his eyes, but Hunith smiled and gave him a conspiratory look.

“He started not long after you left. I tried to talk him out of it, but your father was so excited about it. It took him ages to stop wincing every time he took a sip.”

Merlin gave them a Look and finished off his cup. He set it in the sink and leaned over to give Hunith a kiss. “I’ll be back later, I promise. I just need to pick up something from Will’s.”

Arthur couldn’t miss the intent look in Merlin’s eyes as he spoke. He wasn’t sure what it meant for him, but it made him gulp nonetheless. What had he said yesterday again? ‘We’ll see about that.’ He gave his brother a tight smile and bravely hid behind his piece of toast.

By the time Merlin got back, dinner was almost ready. He breezed in, said a quick hello to everyone and rushed upstairs to his room. When he came back down he had a big grin on his face, and most of it was directed towards Arthur. Their parents didn’t really notice.

“How is Will, dear? Did you get what you needed?” Merlin turned his smiling face to Hunith, nodding.

“Yep. He’s fine. Says hello.”

“Well isn’t that sweet. Why don’t you and Arthur go wash up? We’re just about ready to eat.”

“Sure.”

The bathroom was a lot smaller than Arthur remembered, especially since Merlin was almost a head taller and… apparently crowding him. Arthur sucked in a breath and tensed as Merlin closed the door behind them and stepped into his personal space. He was smiling like an imp and leaning forward much too close to Arthur’s face.

“So, any idea what I did at Will’s today?” And just why did the brat have to sound so cheeky?

“No. And I told you, Merlin. I don’t particularly care.” He tried to squeeze himself around Merlin, but the other boy held fast.

“Don’t you want to know what I had to pick up?”

Arthur swallowed nervously. Merlin was getting closer. “N-no.”

“No?” Merlin smirked. “I’ll give you a hint. It’s small, round, and comes in cute little foil packets.”
With another cheeky grin he brought his arms up around Arthur’s neck and pulled him in close. Brushing his lips across Arthur’s he leaned in to whisper in his ear.

“I thought maybe you’d like use it tonight. I’m certainly up for it.” To emphasize his point he thrust his hips against Arthur’s.

Fuh-uck.

Taking a deep breath, Arthur closed his eyes. He brought his hands up to put a little distance between them. “Look, Merlin… We can’t do this.”

When he opened his eyes to look at his brother, he was presented with the horrible sight of Merlin with a sad, defeated air about him. Pitiful blue eyes looked back at him and Arthur had to fight the urge to gather up Merlin in his arms and never let go.

“I wish…” Merlin trailed off. And he just looked so miserable.

“Wish what?” Arthur prodded.

“Why can’t you remember? I can recall every single detail, right down to the smell of your hair after training, but you don’t remember anything.”

Arthur stared at his brother. “What are you talking about? Remember what, Merlin?”

“Everything.”
