Arthur hides like this for a while, nestled in the mess he has made of Merlin's shirt. Slowly his mind catches up and he pulls away, trying not to see the confusion in Merlin's face as he mumbles something about smelling horrible and head for the bathroom.

Merlin follows quietly. He watches from the door frame as Arthur portions out a dose of sparkling blue toothpaste from a small tube decorated with a drawing of a soccer playing crocodile.

Arthur catches Merlin’s eyes in the mirror and looks away.

-Regular toothpaste makes me sick. This is milder.
-Doesn’t make you sick?
-Not as often.

He stares at the toothbrush as if he dares it to cause trouble. He can feel Merlin's eyes on him.

-You should go. We were supposed to get on with our lives and careers. Mine's on hold, no need for yours to be.

Merlin hesitates a bit before he replies.

-You're mad at me.

Arthur's grip on the sink makes his knuckles turn white, but he doesn't move. It's for the best. Yes, it is. He leans forward and starts to brush. Slow and steady making sure nothing reaches too far back to trigger another round of puking. Merlin fills the bucket with the shower head and empties it in the toilet. Twice. It's annoying. Arthur has done that a million times, he can do it now as well. Maybe it's mostly embarrassing.

-Don't you have some place to be?

Merlin draws his breath. It sounds like he is going to say something, but he exhales instead.
-Yeah, I do actually. I should get my priorities straight.

It's for the best. Merlin would drop everything and he would be miserable. Maybe not today, but years from now he would realize where he could have been. He hears the door close and realize he didn't ask about the bruise on Merlin's face. Arthur is a horrible person.

He cries in the shower. It's a good place to cry, the water washes everything away.

---

It’s still fairly early when Merlin returns home. Mordred is not there, which is good because Merlin swears out loud, kicks the sofa and punches the cushions. He runs through the shower and dress for work -again - before he gives Mordred a call. Mordred's phone obsession is a good thing, he picks up instantly.

---

Someone would probably come by to fetch Arthur for his appointment, but Arthur can’t sit there and wait. He is not entirely sure where the examination would take place, but finds his way to Gaius’ office and sits down outside. Not long after he gets up and starts to pace the corridors. He doesn’t wander too far, just to the glass doors leading to the stairway and back. Anything to keep him from thinking. At last he sees Gaius. The older man smiles when he spots him, as if Arthur is a dear friend of old.

-Mr Pendragon! Good to see you up and about.

Arthur smiles weakly.
-Hope I'm not imposing. I got restless.

Gaius gestures for Arthur to walk with him.
-Not at all, all is ready.
