He wished he could be like Prince Arthur.
It wasn't because Arthur was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. It wasn't because Arthur could do anything, anything at all, and get away with it. It wasn't because he was the Crown Prince. It wasn't because he was the apple of the king's eye, the golden son of Camelot. It wasn't because he was the best swordsman of Camelot, and arguably the best in all of Albion. Not even because he was Camelot's most desired bachelor.
It was because he had Merlin. Merlin, who was the most loyal friend anyone could ask for and who had earned the prince’s loyalty in return. Merlin, who would do anything for Arthur, who would agree to die for him without even batting an eyelid. Merlin, who had a word of wisdom for every situation, who provided counsel as valuable as anyone in Uther’s court. Merlin, who was always with Arthur, whether the prince was to ride out for a merry hunt or to face down an army. Merlin, who looked at Arthur as if the he was the centre of his world. Merlin, who was the prince’s manservant, and yet had played the biggest part in shaping him to be the man he had become.
Arthur had Merlin. And that is why he wished he could be like Arthur.
