“He’s totally unreasonable, Gwen. First he says I have to wear a suit and then he won’t tell me what we’re doing. I hate not knowing what we’re doing,” Merlin whined into the phone. “What if he’s taking me somewhere awful and stuffy like the opera or a polo match or…”
“Merlin,” Gwen interrupted, “Arthur’s not dragging you somewhere awful to celebrate your anniversary. Stop your whinging and go get pretty for your guy.”
Merlin was a bit shocked at Gwen’s sharp tone but then his eyes narrowed. “You know something, don’t you?”
“I know everything,” Gwen laughed. “Now be a good boy and don’t forget to brush your hair.
“Yes, mum,” Merlin snorted. “If I hate this I’m going to be very, very cross.
“You’re not going to hate it, Merlin, I promise,” Gwen answered. “Call me later, okay? Love you.”
“Love you, too. Bye.” Merlin put down his mobile and stomped back into the bedroom to put on the suit Arthur had laid out on their bed.
Gwen smiled softly and went back to preparing supper, thinking about the ring box that had been hiding in her underwear drawer until this evening ”Because Merlin is a nosy bastard and he’d ruin the surprise,” Arthur had said fondly.
No, Merlin wasn’t going to hate this one bit.
