Gwen had been thinking about the legacy Arthur had left in Camelot since the day he died and had tired her upmost to honour Arthur’s memory. She did her best to rule the Kingdom in a like-minded manner to its previous ruler, but she knew there was one thing Arthur was never able to achieve in his life time. In the end, she wasn’t sure if he would have come around to the idea.
He had had the chance to embrace magic, but knew it had been the one person who should have encouraged him to do so, who had advised him against it. What Merlin’s motives were at the time, she did not know. All she knew was Merlin had been the one to reinforce what Uther had taught his son about people and magic.
In the aftermath of the battle of Camlann, Gwen did not wish to bring up the topic of magic, but she did not want the Kingdom she now ruled over to digress to its former state with fear and hate among the people. Arthur would not have wanted all he worked so hard for and gave his life to protect to be lost. Nor would the Knights, who followed Arthur to the death. And neither would Merlin, who served and protected Arthur, all the while keeping secret the power he possessed.
It was now, just as the dust clouds from the war had settled and the people of Camelot had accepted her as their Queen, she needed to act to implement change.
Gwen called Leon and Percival, the most accomplished Knights of the Round Table and those closest to Arthur, to her chambers to state and discuss her proposal.
Percival had all but appointed himself as her personal guard. So when the knock came and his voice carried through the wood, “Sir Leon is here, Your Highness,” she smiled, knowing Percival had been one of the standing guards outside her room.
“Come in, both of you,” she called out in reply.
The door swung open and Leon entered. Percival followed a couple of moments later after a whispered conversation with the other guard on duty. They both performed a small bow, at which she shook her head.
“There is no need for that,” she told them kindly. “Take a seat,” she said gesturing towards a small round table with four chairs surrounding it.
When they were all seated, Leon spoke. “What did you want to talk to us about, my Lady? Did they search party find trace of Merlin?”
“No, there are still no signs as to where Merlin has disappeared to and I am beginning to think that is the way it will stay as long as he wishes it. But that we can discuss at another time. Today, I want to ask you about my plans for Camelot and the future of magic in this Kingdom.” She paused to take in their reactions to the news.
“Why just us?” Percival asked automatically.
Gwen had anticipated this question and responded quickly. “Because you were the only other people, besides Gaius, who were close to Arthur and who he would have called friends. He trusted both of you and so do I. And I didn’t invite Gaius because… I need an unbiased opinion.”
Gwen could tell Leon understood, but Percival still seemed unsure. He didn’t know as much about Gaius’ and Camelot’s history as they did. “I’ll explain later,” Leon told him and he seemed happy with that.
Gwen continued. “I want to make Camelot a safe place to practice magic again. There are people with natural gift who should not have to hide who they are or be persecuted for being different. I understand not all magic is good, but not all is evil either, as Uther wanted everyone to believe. I think it depends on the person, just like every other crime committed in this Kingdom, are the law should he changed accordingly. I guess I am asking, do you think my vision is achievable and will you support and help me to achieve it?”
Both men looked at each other and a broad grin spread across each their faces. They let Gwen see their delighted faces and Leon said, “Of course we will.”
