issy5209 Percy ran across the field when he saw Arthur going down. The shot had been misplaced and hit the back of Arthur’s head from short distance.
“Arthur!”
He shoved the player, who had kicked the ball, aside and cradled Arthur in his arms. “Arthur, can you hear me?”
There was no reaction and Percy tried to brush Arthur’s sweaty hair off his forehead, but his goalie gloves made his motions clumsy. While the others yelled for the paramedics, a cold hand clutched Percy’s heart. “Arthur! Arthur, talk to me. Please be okay. Please!”
He touched foreheads with Arthur, held him close and didn’t even notice when Arthur opened his eyes. “Save the mouth-to-mouth for later, Knight.”
Percy pulled back, grinning like a loon and dismissed the feeling of lips brushed against his cheek as a figment of his imagination.
The paramedics took over and slowly walked Arthur off the field. All Percy could do was to go back to his goal, finish the game and shove thoughts of Arthur to the back of his mind. He knew they wouldn’t stay there for long, Arthur had been constantly on his mind for quite a while now.
After a 3:1 win that tasted shallow with their captain hurt, Percy showered and changed. Arthur’s things were still in his locker, the ambulance had taken him away without the detour via the locker room. Percy felt like someone punched his stomach. What if Arthur was really hurt?
Just then his mobile rang.
“Perce?”
“Arthur! How are you? Where are you? Is it bad?”
A low chuckle came down the line. “Okay, a bit dizzy but okay. I’m at home and I’ll live.”
Percy let out a breath he hadn’t been aware of holding. “Good!”
“Listen. They didn’t let me take my things, do you think you could take them along? I’ll pick them up tomorrow.”
“Sure. I could…you know I could bring them over?” And I need to see you to make sure you’re alright. But Percy didn’t say that.
“’kay, if you want to. And you could…”
“Yeah?”
“You owe me a mouth-to-mouth, remember?”
Percy grinned all the way over to Arthur’s house.
