Retrospective
His whole life had been marked by bad luck. When he was still a youngster, his poor parents were killed by bandits. And since he wasn't born noble, he'd been denied his life's ambition, to become a knight of Camelot. Exciled, he'd lost hope and direction, drifting lucklessly as a miserable sell-sword. The very worst of luck, too, that the woman he would always, always love, chose to marry someone else.
Lancelot sighed. He had to admit that in the vast murk of misfortune, there had also been bright glimmers of good luck: That Merlin became his friend and trusted him with his magical secret. That he did eventually become an honoured knight. The Camelot knights' camaraderie. And most of all - those glorious, desperate few hours when Gwen was completely his, and he hers, and their hearts beat as one.
Bad luck, good luck, just his luck, out of luck - in the end, none of it mattered. He would carry it all away with him through the veil to nothingness, and that would be that. And if his final act could bring all those he cared for so deeply new chances and happier lives, what better way to go?
