Merlin could never abide bullies. In a small village, he had to deal with them often enough. Living every day knowing that he had all this power but if found out, it would likely mean his death or his mother’s banishment. Instead, so often he had to pose as a fool or a clumsy idiot, hiding in plain sight. A distraction, a lie, to keep them both safe.

But it was also exhausting.

Merlin hoped Camelot would be different, that with so many people, no one would notice him.A fresh start.

Until he met Arthur. Bully, tormentor of servants, laughing at Merlin’s futile attempt to stop him, to see reason.

He should have known better, he should have walked away. But the look on the git’s face, the way Arthur taunted Merlin was just too much.

Merlin couldn’t use magic but his fist should have been enough. Swinging it high, thinking it would make a satisfying crunch into that condescending face, how was he to know that Arthur was so much better at fighting?

Perhaps Merlin was an idiot after all.

With Arthur’s voice tight against Merlin’s ear, asking him if Merlin knew how to walk on his knees, redundant really when Merlin was already kneeling under Arthur’s strength, captive and unable to fight back, all Merlin could do was hiss out his fury and try not to turn the pillock into a toad.

Then Pendragon did what all bullies do, let his lowly sycophants dirty their lowly hands and drag Merlin off to prison, the shining prince walking away free, laughing at the peasant who dared challenge him.

Next time, no matter how much Pendragon needed to learn a lesson, Merlin might be an idiot but he was no fool.

Next time, Merlin would keep his mouth shut and try not to start another fist fight with the prince.

Next time, it would be Merlin that walked away.
