“We’ve only got one room left, and it’s got only one bed,” the innkeeper told them.

“We can do better than this,” Arthur said, turning away.

“All the other inns are booked up solid tonight. So where are you going to go? Outside where it’s freezing and wet?”

Merlin reached out and took Arthur’s shoulder. “Come on, Arthur, I can sleep on the floor. It’s okay.”

Arthur turned. “Fine, we’ll take the room.”

The innkeeper grinned and held out his hand for the money. Arthur paid him and he led the way to their room. Arthur grimaced. It was small and dingy, but the linens looked clean. He thanked the innkeeper, who left.

“Finally,” Merlin said, tossing their bags down and sitting in the only chair.

Arthur sat on the bed. “Get some rest.”

“Right.” Merlin pulled a blanket from one of the bags and wrapped it around himself. Using one of the bags as pillow, he settled onto the floor.

Arthur removed his boots and settled himself into the bed, drawing the blanket over him. He blew out the candle, rolled to his side, and fell asleep.

Sometime later, Arthur woke. He’d heard something loud. A few seconds later, Merlin sneezed again. “Merlin, are you all right?”

“I’m fine,” he replied, though he didn’t sound fine. He sounded cold and miserable.

Arthur got out of bed and knelt next to Merlin. The fire had gone out, for one, and it was cold. He felt Merlin; he was shaking and cold. He couldn’t have his servant getting a cold because then he would get the cold. He made a snap decision. “Merlin, get up.” He reached out a hand and helped Merlin stand.

“What’s going on?” Merlin asked.

“I may regret this, but you’re getting into bed with me.”

“Arthur, I can’t get into your bed. There’s no room.”

“Take off your boots and get into the bed. Lay on your side and there will be room.”

“If you’re sure . . .”

“I am. Come on, let’s get back to sleep.” Arthur watched as Merlin got into the bed, doing as Arthur had asked. Arthur got into bed and laid on his side, his back to Merlin’s. He felt Merlin’s shivering stop.

“Thank you,” Merlin said.

“Think nothing of it. Just sleep.”

Merlin sighed and was soon asleep. Arthur smiled then dropped off to sleep himself.
