When Merlin first saw Arthur, he thought him a bully, a raging idiot, and definitely someone to avoid. Tied to him, a servant Arthur could misuse as much as he liked, was Merlin’s worst nightmare.
Things changed. Smirks turned to smiles, thrown objects began to miss, Arthur even asked Merlin’s opinion-not that he listened all that much.
Insults became banter, became endearments, smiles heating up, hate turning into a bottomless love so intense there were no words for it.
When Arthur returned, Merlin wouldn’t speak of love. He’d smile and call him clotpole and hope it would be enough.
