Time had no meaning. There might be a breeze, water lapping at Avalon’s shore, the sun rising and setting and rising again, but Merlin paid it no mind. He was numb, his mind blank, his heart already turned to dust.
He supposed he breathed, but Arthur was dead. Merlin sat there, knowing it was all his fault, and tried not to live.
A warm nose butting his chest, Aithusa’s mournful cries finally penetrated. Blinking up into grief-stricken dragon-eyes, Merlin knew.
He had failed Morgana, too, failed them all, but Merlin would be damned if he failed Aithusa a second time.
