Merlin dropped down beside Gwaine, who was too engrossed in watching the fight to notice him immediately. Merlin watched as Sir Percival, who was fighting one of the visiting knights, parried a shot easily and pushed his opponent back with no effort before getting into a stance to deliver the next blow.
“He’s good, isn’t he?” Merlin commented, bringing Gwaine out of his reverie.
“Yes,” Gwaine replied shortly when he saw Merlin beside him. He turned back to watch Percival dodge another attack neatly. “He really is.”
“No wonder he defeated you in the previous round,” Merlin teased, trying to initiate their usual banter. “Maybe you should be a little more ambitious.”
Gwaine snorted.
“I can beat him easily,” he replied, smirking slightly.
Merlin raised his eyebrows at him.
“Gwaine, I watched him defeat you just this afternoon.”
“Merlin, you simple thing. I obviously threw the fight didn’t I?”
“Yeah right.”
Gwaine turned to look at Merlin. He paused as if trying to make a decision, then turned back to the fight just as Percival knocked his opponent to the ground and loomed over him, demanding his victory.
“My ambitions lie elsewhere,” Gwaine replied, voice almost inaudible amongst the roar of the home crowd. “Didn’t you see how upset he has been since Lancelot passed? Look how pleased he looks now.” Gwaine turned to wink at Merlin before moving into the arena to join Percival celebrating with his sword raised, leaving Merlin behind looking thoroughly astonished.
