“Ha! Take that, foul beast!”
“Morgana! What are you doing? Put that sword down.”
“Hello, Mother. I’m killing a monster, just like Father and Uncle Uther.”
Vivienne cringed inside at her daughter’s name for the king. She reached out and took the wooden practice sword from Morgana’s hands. “Where did you even find this?”
Morgana smiled up at her sweetly, as if she hadn’t just been imagining herself killing something. “One of the squires left it in the Armory. I’m going to be a knight like Father, so I need it to learn how to use a sword.”
“Morgana, you know you can’t be a knight. You’re a girl.”
“I heard Father tell Sir Geoffrey that any noble with ambition and drive can become a knight. I’m noble and I am ambitious and have the drive.” Morgana plucked the sword out of her mother’s hands and turned back toward the small form she’d made with the wooden handle from a broom and a hat. “One day I’ll be the First Knight of Camelot. You just watch.”
Vivienne pursed her lips and crossed her arms. She let her daughter lunge at the “monster” and decided to let Gorlois take up the issue with Morgana when he returned from the king’s latest campaign against his enemies.
