Part 15
It was dark as Arthur and Gwen walked into the foyer. Arthur could see the door to his father's study standing open. He glanced at Gwen then led her down the hall.

"Father?" Arthur called out just inside the doorway.

Uther stood up. "Come in and close the door." He went over to pour himself a drink. "I see you have returned with your bride. Forgive me if I don't wish you well."

"I didn't expect you to be happy about my marriage to Guinevere but it is my marriage and not yours after all." Arthur stood his ground.

"Do you not realize what you've done? You have scandalized this family by marrying that …." Uther wagged a finger at Gwen. "That ambitious tart! She is just marrying you to better her situation and nothing more. We will have it dissolved. I will contact the solicitors in the morning and they will see to the paperwork." He sat down at his desk.

"You will not!" Arthur shouted. "I love her and I refuse to let you bully me into dissolving my marriage to Guinevere. We were married in the church in the eyes of God and you can't just wipe it away."

"Arthur, you must see that this is a mistake." Uther slammed his glass on the desk. "You must marry a woman of peerage. You will be a duke oneday and no one will accept her as a duchess."

"I don't care! I love her and that is that." Arthur slammed his fist on the desk. "You will accept it or I will leave."

"Wait!" Gwen shouted. "My Lord, we apologize for not consulting you before we wed, but as Arthur and I are of legal age it was not necessary. I love him and what I don't know, I can learn. I'm sure your daughter will help me as will Arthur. All this shouting is getting us nothing. We will not divorce and an annulment is not possible. We will just have to learn to get along."

Uther glared at her. "Are you with child?"

"I don't know. It's only been a day. It's too soon to tell." Gwen glanced at Arthur. "If I am, it is your grandchild and that should mean something to you."

"Yes. It gives you a better foothold in this family." Uther picked up his drink then sat it back down. "Who is to say the child is Arthur's? You could be carrying any man's child. That would just further your ambitious goals."

"Father, she was untouched before I took her to our marriage bed." Arthur blushed slightly.

Uther raised an eyebrow.

"He speaks the truth." Gwen looked over at Arthur. "Please My Lord. It's been a long journey and we are weary. You have no choice but to accept this."

"Hmph!" Uther picked up his drink and downed it in one gulp. "Go. Out of my sight."

"Goodnight Father." Arthur reached out for Gwen's hand and led her from the room.

They started up the stairs to Arthur's room. Arthur put his arm around her waist as they climbed.

"I'm sorry. That was unforgivable to ask such things of you." Arthur whispered.

"It's fine. I expected him to react that way." Gwen smiled. "All I want now is sleep."

"Just sleep?" Arthur grinned.

Gwen blushed. "Well….."
