Gaius just caught the last words of the conversation and Uther’s remark that was a bit forced and not as funny as Uther might have thought. He didn’t approve of the kids’ tradition of breaking news to their father at this event, but at least the boys had finally told him.

But then he saw Merlin pale and Arthur taking another deep breath.

“No, but I am, father.”

Gaius sighed. They could have waited with that news for a while, couldn’t they? He turned, got a chair for Uther to sink into and fetched him a whiskey. He handed the drink over just in time to hear Uther mutter about the impossibility of it all and the shame that his son seemed to be the woman in this relationship.

After Uther downed the whiskey, he threw Gaius a look before he returned his attention to Arthur and Merlin with a sigh. “Do you know if it'll be a boy or a girl?”
