“I couldn't help it,” Arthur says, but Merlin still hasn’t looked up from bundle in his arms.
The damp black and white kitten swaddled in Arthur’s suit jacket blinks back.
“She ran under the worksite trailer. It’s supposed to rain all weekend.”
The kitten darting beneath the metal stairs had caught Arthur’s eye in the dim dusk light.
With some jerky stolen from Percival’s snack stash as bait, it had taken him an hour to coax the wet, shivering kitten close enough to grab.
Merlin finally looks up, giving Arthur a grin. “You did the right thing and now I know where the phrase you look like something the cat dragged in came from. Your slacks and shoes are ruined.”
Arthur glances down at his mud soaked loafers and grimaces. “I hadn’t even noticed.”
“I’m sure you were much too concerned with this damsel in distress,” Merlin says, rubbing the kitten under its chin. “You picked the right knight in shining armor, kitty. Let’s find you something to eat while daddy showers.” The kitten purrs.
“I never said anything about keeping it,” Arthur protests weakly.
“You didn’t have to,” Merlin laughs, “Your can I keep it? face gave you away.”
