Work!

Jun 13, 2012 12:48

I really must stop telling my co-workers that I'm going to con's. They just don't get it. Sure there are cons for certain things like Xena (by creation) or just Stargate cons. But they always say Ohhh you're going to a silly Star Wars or Star Trek con... No, it's not only for Star Wars or Star Trek... jeeze. It's just not understood the vast ( Read more... )

I would love to have some geeks to work with. It always helps to have others that share your passion and don't think u silly for it! Thank you :)

The majority of people, sadly, don't have the capacity to love something with the amount of passion and dedication that we have. They're just fair weather fans of whatever is popular. Just feel sympathy for them because they miss out on so much awesome content (shows, stories, music), as well as CONtent (fun times at conventions).

Well said! I agree that they miss out on great characters, actors, ideas, stories, adventures! And I think con's are just alot of fun more so when you connect with the other people going too!

It's a little similar like telling anybody here that you don't like facebook, that you are on livejournal for 8 years and they don't know what the hell you are talking about..

Anyway, I agree that telling co-workers who don't know about these things is sad because probably they'll assume what you said.. just don't pay attention to them.. they are ignorants who will miss all the fun you'll have :)

Is that Henry Cavill in your icon? thank you. You are right they are missing out. No one should make fun of another for something they like or are passionate about. That just mocks the person and makes them feel bad.

Folks not in fandom really don't get it. Thank goodness for the internet and cons! Though you'd think with the high profile Comic Con has gained and the weight Hollywood bigwigs have given it in recent years, regular folks would start seeing beyond the "-atic" part of we fans.

Agreed! They don't get it and I don't know why. Yes, comic con is so huge and gets so many celebs how can people think of the -atic part? Maybe cause of how it started with teh Trekkies? I don't know. Even so, what the heck is wrong with that? I think anyone can do what they want... I did wonder about this woman though I saw on a Bruce Campbell documetary. She collected/loved everything Xena but she had had plastic surgery to look like Lucy Lawless... That kind of think I think turns people off or makes them lump us "fans" in with the "atics" *sigh* it's so nice to find you guys on the internet that know what i'm talking about adn love it just as much as me.

Yeah, I'd say that woman had more going on than just being a fan. That's not right. :-/

I really don't see fandom as all that different than the sports fans, who go just as crazy about their teams and players and such, yet they don't have the stigma. Whatever happened to different strokes for different folks? 'Tis unfair! Thank goodness for the internet, indeed! :-)

That is so true. My husband is nuts about football. He has a fit cause we go to Dragon Con every year (I drag him there) and that's the first football game of the season. Those guys really get into it and it's exactly like us. well said!
