And this in turn inspired glassyskies to write fic about teen!Novaks, a Jacob POV to go with her Jimmy POV from a few weeks ago, BOTH OF WHICH ARE FLAWLESS. In the interest of making her write even more fic of the twins

Oh god, you don't understand, when Jacob leaves and Jimmy marries Amelia, it's like, I WANT YOU TO LOVE YOUR WIFE AND BE HAPPY BUT OH MY GOD WHYYYYYY DID YOU LET JACOB GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DKFJGHSLDGFJHSLSDFJKG

It's so funny, actually, because we spend EXPONENTIALLY more time discussing the segments when they are apart, rather than together-all the moments just before the storm breaks, these are where we live. The Novakcest motto is "skip straight to feelings, plot can come later."

"WE DON'T WANT ANY" OH GOD AND JACOB MEANS EVERY WORD OF IT. Don't want any girls, any distractions, any intruders into their little world of two. What does Jimmy even see in her? She laughs too much and her hair is stupid. He ensconces himself in his room (Jimmy kicked him out of theirs) and plays his guitar loudly, vengefully, trying to drown out the muffled conversation in the foyer as Amelia gets ready to sweep Jimmy away

Jacob curled up in his bed and the walls of this house are thin
that always used to comfort him but now he can hear them
low voices and fabic, muffled, for fucks sake who knew 'cuddle' was an onomatopoeia?
he doesn't even know whyyyyyy he's so angry
and their voice, little giggles, and amelia
asking for all his secrets, "Jimmy, tell me something that no one else knows about you."
and Jacob is like

Or so he thinks because then jimmy is whispering,
"Jacob would make fun of me, but..." and telling amelia how he feels when he prays
and it's like the wall is suddenly made of double, brick, like there's a fucking moat and drawbridge between their pillows instead of cheap wallpaper

CUDDLE AS ONOMATOPOEIA I THINK I LOVE YOU

this is the first time jacob has really had to face the concept of secrets
or at least, secrets that are not What They Don't Talk About
because here is jimmy, telling amelia stories of things jacob wasn't there for
when did he stop knowing jimmy's best jokes
jacob feels sick but still listens greedily, and jimmy's voice echoes weirdly in his head as though from far away
it's hard to be louder than the blood rushing under his skin
and then they get really quiet, the blatant silence, just breathing
he punches the wall between them but it's plaster and he doesn't even leave a mark
just curls up and clutches his bruised knuckles

NEW GIRL. And everyone is impressed and excited by her because they don't get many new kids in Pontiac, and she's just so likeable that people don't even shun her for going out with Jimmy; instead they start letting Jimmy to some of the more elite parties, the ones that you have to actually be popular to know about, and Jimmy wants to feel ecstatic, he wants to rub this in the faces of everyone who edged away from him when he let too much slip about family hunting trips, and mostly he wants to be happy that Amelia is sitting in his lap for everyone to see, but his mind just keeps playing Jacob on loop, the way he shrugged and turned away and said "have fun man" but then slammed his door shut a little too hard. Jimmy doesn't let himself get drunk, remembering how messed up Jacob was the first time they tried it, remembering all the unwanted things that came out of his brother's mouth.

HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW. HE WISHES JACOB WOULD SHUT UP BUT HE IS DESPERATE FOR MORE. HE LASHES OUT TO SHUT HIM DOWN BUT USES WORDS SURE TO INCITE A TOO-HONEST RESPONSE. Sometimes Jimmy has flashes of self-awareness and hates everything he is becoming.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT CLAIRE THAT IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW.

Jacob wants to hate her, right. All blond and pale like Amelia, her mother's voice and habits.
He tries not to see Jimmy in her, but it's the fucking eyes. She has his brother's eyes, and that means she has his eyes, and sometimes, sometimes he wonders if she could pass as his kid. If anything ever happened, he could take her in. And he hates that these are the things he thinks about.
