Very emotive and I love the little quiet glimpses Uther gets of Arthur. His thinking that Arthur's compassion for a creature below himself is just a childish stage that he needs to be removed from. Little Arthur is brave and noble even when he is so young and, as I see it, far more open-eyed than Uther thinks.
Thank you! Those "quiet glimpses" gave me some of the most trouble- I was trying to show the difference in Arthur's behavior when he's alone, but of course I was stuck in Uther's head, which in this story is not the funnest place to be! I'm really glad you liked it :)
Your comment made me laugh out loud, not gonna lie.
Uther fascinates me because he's got this whole angstridden backstory that informs so much of what he does and yet, as you say, he needs a good smack in the face.
Yeah, and I think a lot of credit for that goes to Anthony Head- it would have been really easy for Uther to just become a caricature of a dictator who just shouts "KILL THE WITCH" all the time, but every time he seems about to cross that line there's something that pulls him back and makes us feel bad for him.
As for your boyfriend thinking you're crazy: I feel your pain.
Poor Scrappy, RIP. Arthur seems like the kind of person who would like dogs more than humans, anyway, and it's not like he has anywhere else to put his affections. (Until Merlin comes along, that is.)
That was lovely! Heartbreaking, but gorgeous. I have decided I am a sucker for fics showing the Merlin/Arthur relationship through Uther and this has to be one of my favorites. I can't wait to see what else you come up with in this fandom!
Aw, thank you so much! I've always loved the outsider POV too, though there doesn't seem to be a lot from Uther's perspective. Let me know if your merlin_finders search turns up anything good ;)
That was great. I loved how Uther saw only weakness when Arthur saw only love. Loved the comparison of the dog to Merlin, both loved, both helpless without Arthur's intervention.
