he was. My mother had every single LP that man made in the 50's and I knew all the words to all his songs (including a song about sweating toast...). I have in my possession a recording of this song, sung by Roger Whittaker.

Wow, you're really soaked in his music. He seemed to be on the radio a lot when I was young, then disappeared. It was only years later that I found out about his civil rights work.

When I first heard this song, I must have missed all that about the shuttered shops because I thought it was a sad song about a father who couldn't afford to buy his daughter the ribbons! That made the miracle even better.

He really was an amazing man, very talented. One of my favorite things in this world is his turn on the Muppet Show and all of them doing the Banana Boat song. I can't watch that clip and be in a bad mood after.

On one of his early albums there is a song about drinking a toast at a wedding.

Drink, drink this toast
drink this wedding toast
drink, drink this toast
for the two we love the most

I was very young and the way I heard it was 'drink this sweating toast'. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want sweating toast, it always made me a little queasy.
