The temperature first thing was -5 and frost is still thick on the ground. Tomorrow may be even colder and guess what? We are having ‘a scheduled power cut for routine maintenance’. How on earth is a cold, old person like me to keep warm? Those of you who live in towns and cities, does this ever happen to you ( Read more... )

This is our first winter in this particular town but we don't have any power cuts scheduled- not that I've heard of, anyway.

Wrap up as best you can.

Thank you, I will. I'm pretty annoyed about it, though. Perhaps it's a plot to reduce the surplus population.

A battery powerd heater may fit the bill, or a gas heater, maybe a hot water bottle, but if a senior lives there, aren't they required to have either a back up generator, or maybe some kjind of device that doesn't need power for the place? Just trying to help

Thank you kindly. I am what you call a senior but I don't know of any requirement by any organisation to ensure that I don't freeze to death.

My plan is hot water bottles :-) Luckily, I have a gas hob.

There you go. Hot water bottles don't need electricity to work. :) The city can't evict a senior, and they have to bring accomodations, but study the county and state laws to be sure.

Have a great 2022 and beyond.

Good grief. They certainly picked the wrong week for their "routine maintenance". But I hope it means you won't experience any further power cuts this winter.

I had a very ominous leaflet from the power company this morning, entitled "Important Power Cut Information". They seem to be planning for the worst.

They weren't to know, I suppose but we had 'routine maintenance' only in August.

Eek, I haven't had any dire threats like that but I've been prepared for a while with extra batteries, candles, matches, battery-operated candles (with flicker effect!) and more hot water bottles. Hope I don't need them.
