Do a lot of girls die in the Chalet School books, or are they generally rescued at the last moment?

The girls do face all these perils but no one actually dies. (The willingness of local mountain folk to turn out to rescue silly, foreign schoolgirls, is remarkable.) Their fate depends on their behaviour. A serious crime like disobedience is punished by EBD with a dangerous illness. Genuine misfortune, and the girl may get away with a week in san. No rules at all apply to Joey Bettany, EBD's chief character and darling, who can do no wrong. At least twice she ends up at death's door because of her own reckless, thoughtless behaviour but is never blamed for it.

Very funny. You have to suspend all common sense when you read some books!

What's the German for 'wonderful'? feather_ghyll July 31 2021, 10:15:07 UTC
“Here, John, look at this,” Mrs Smith said, handing her husband a most informative prospectus.

He started reading and soon looked up at his wife with a dazzling smile, baring most of his teeth. “I say, Mary, this sounds like just the thing!”

Mr and Mrs Smith had, after some eleven years, come to the realisation that their child was rather a bore and something of a hinderance. They had recently agreed that the best way of getting their daughter, Betty Thekla Smith, off their hands was to send her to a boarding school, preferably abroad where people wouldn’t find her second name peculiar. Mrs Smith had taken it upon herself to gather prospectuses, and this one was by far the most promising.

“Read it to the end, darling,” his wife replied, lighting a celebratory cigarette.

'Wunderbar', she said, in fast, fluent German. 'Don't worry, you'll soon pick it up.'

Ha,ha, Betty Thekla! She sounds like trouble.

I've just finished Bride Leads, So I'm about half way through my read.
