It had been a great morning for Callie. Waking up with Arizona in her arms was in opinion the only right way to start the day. Her day continued to get better after two successful surgeries and another trial of jello cartilage.
She found herself on the Ped’s wing with her lunch hour to look forward to. After quickly scanning the floor she realized her girlfriend was no where to be found.
“Are you looking for Dr. Robbins?” A nurse asked with a knowing grin.
“I am in fact. Where can I find her?” Callie asked with a grin.
“She headed to her office about an hour and half ago and hasn’t been seen since” The nurse replied before grabbing charts and heading into one of the rooms.
With a new destination in mind Callie headed towards the blonde’s office, stopping only to grab two cups of coffee.
She knocked sharply on the door as she opened the door. Arizona looked up from her paperwork and smiled. She held up her hand and gestured to the phone with the other, all the while holding Callie captive with her smile.
“Super magic” Callie muttered taking a seat across from her.
“Dr. Robbins?” A man’s voice came over the speaker phone.
“Yes, I’m here”
“Ok then, everything looks fine. I’ll have the papers drafted and sent to you later today. We can finalize them at the time in which they are signed.”
“Super! Thank you Mr. Young”
“Happy to help. I hope everything works out for you”
They said their goodbyes and Arizona hung up the phone. Callie stood briefly and set the coffee down, leaning in for a quick kiss hello before sitting back down.
“This is a nice surprise” Arizona commented sipping her drink.
“I just wanted to see if you wanted to grab lunch with me?”
Arizona’s smile turned into a pout.
“I’m finishing up my lunch now. I have surgery in twenty minutes”
“Well suck. Fine then I guess I’ll just go eat my lunch alone...with no one around” Callie said with a mournful sigh and playful wink. Arizona smiled and began straightening the papers on her desk. “I guess you will, but maybe you’ll get lucky and Mark will be there!” She teased.
Callie stood and moved around to sit on the edge of the desk with her legs barely touching Arizona’s.
“I don’t want to get lucky with Mark” She said as she leaned in dangerously close to Arizona’s lips. “I would rather get lucky with you” Arizona’s eyes had slipped closed in preparation for the kiss and leaned forward to connect their lips. Feeling nothing but air she peeked one eye open to see that Callie had leaned back and was currently smirking at her.
“You’re mean” Arizona pouted again.
“You’re beautiful” Was Callie’s only reply as she leaned in swiftly and kissed her. After a blissful minute Callie’s pager began to beep. Sighing she looked down to check it.
“You jinxed me, it’s Mark” Arizona chuckled and checked her watch.
“I should be going anyways, I have a tiny human to save”
As she stood up she claimed one more kiss before they began to walk to the door.
“Tonight dinner?” Callie asked holding the door.
“Can we do a quiet night in? I want to finish our conversation from last night” Callie nodded ushering her out the door.
“I get off at 6. Come on over when you get done with your post ops” Callie said as they went their separate ways.
The rest of the day had run smoothly and Callie was excited to find herself in the attending’s lounge getting ready to go home. She didn’t know what the evenings discussion would bring, but was excited to clear the air.
“Still want to get lucky?”
Callie jumped at the sudden voice and the feeling of the arms around her waist.
“Always” She said with a smile. Her body easily molding to her girlfriend’s touch.
“My last surgery was cancelled. I thought I would head home with you, if that’s alright with you?” She let go and began to change.
“More than alright. Teddy has a transplant tonight so, no Christina at the apartment. We can eat and talk in peace” Callie mentioned as she pulled on her shirt.
“Perfect” Arizona said buttoning her jeans. They finished changing in silence. Stealing the occasional peek and stopping only briefly for a quick kiss or soft touch.
The apartment was warm and inviting, which was a pleasant change from the way it had felt the past few weeks.
“I can start dinner while you shower and get more comfortable” Callie said setting her stuff down and heading into the kitchen. Arizona nodded and headed towards the bathroom. Callie was comforted by the sounds of the water running and Arizona singing to herself. She tooled around the kitchen and almost didn’t hear Arizona when she called out from the bedroom.
“Calliope, I took all my stuff home. Can I barrow something to wear?”
Callie cringed at the reminder that her stuff had been gone, pushing the sick feeling aside she called out, “You can if you want, but you forgot some stuff so I just put it in the bottom drawer” There was a long pause.
“My favorite shirt!” Arizona emerged from the bedroom pulling her wet hair back into a ponytail.
“Yeah, you left it...I was working up the courage to give it back” Callie said casually as she added ingredients to the pan. The blonde opened a cabinet and took out to glasses and began to search for a bottle of wine.
“I don’t think I forgot them...I think you stole them!” Arizona teased as she poured the wine. Callie chuckled to herself as she put the pan in the oven and covered the sauce pot on the stove.
“Guilty as charged, but it’s only fair since you stole my hoodie” She set the timer and picked up her glass taking a long drink. “Dinner will be ready in an hour” Arizona smiled and sat down on the couch. Taking the hint Callie sat down facing her and set her glass down on the table. The space was too great for the blonde so she tucked her legs under herself and scooted closer until her kneecaps touched Callie’s body. Reaching out she placed her hand on Callie’s leg and let out a nervous sigh.
“I don’t know where to start” Callie said softly.
“Let’s start with the big part, kids”
“I’m not going to hold you to it Arizona. We could have died and people say things they necessarily mean out of shock.” Callie said holding her hand tightly. Arizona’s head tilted to the side and she scrunched her face in thought.
“Did you mean it when you said you didn’t want them if it meant not being with me?” Her eyes had narrowed and she waited for her answer.
“Yes, of course! I don’t know how to not be with you. Even when I decided to hate your guts I still wanted you. You and your damn super magic smile” Callie replied passionately. The blonde’s expression softened as she smiled.
“If you meant what you said then why do you doubt that I meant what I said? I can’t be without you either. I may have like zero confidence in my abilities to be a parent but I have like beyond a millions in you. We can do this, I can do this...with you” She said with a smile and squeezed the brunette’s hand. Callie felt like her world was exploding in technicolor. Tears slipped from her eyes and she pulled her into a hug, peppering kisses on her neck and face.
“Thank you. I love you so much and as for your skills as a parent. I know you’re going to be great...super even” Callie hugged and kissed her again. When she pulled back Arizona leaned down and picked her bag up off of the floor. Callie was perplexed as Arizona pulled out three different folders.
“Ok, things are going to change and I don’t do well with change. So we are going to need a game plan” Arizona said holding up the folders. A small smile graced Callie’s face as she listened to Arizona’s explanation, “Ok, the red folder has some legal papers I had drawn up. Things like power of attorney, domestic partnerships, adoption and so on. It also has the contact information of all of the expectable sperm banks with 200 miles” She handed the folder over to a stunned Callie.
“Now I realize that we don’t need all of those things right now...but we will eventually which bring me to the other two folders” Arizona held up a yellow folder labeled “Plan A” and a blue one labeled “Plan B”. After Callie had skimmed through the red folder she looked up at the other two.
“I’ll bite. What are plans A and B?” Callie asked setting the red folder down.
“I am so glad you asked” Arizona said with a playful smile. “Plan A is a two year plan” She opened the fold to revel charts, graphs, calendars, vacation itineraries and much more. “Plan A says we have two years of us. Two years of Spain, Fiji, sangrias, and bikinis. In those two years we would need to find a house and file for partnership and then get your dogs and my chickens. After the two years we could try and start a family, Plan A also has a sub-plan: Plan A 2.0, in which we start trying earlier so the baby would arrive either on or just after the two year mark” Arizona took a deep breath and handed the yellow folder over.
Callie flipped through the folder and smiled two her girlfriend before saying, “remember to breathe sweetheart” Arizona’s grin widened.
“This is our four year option. Plan B has similarities to Plan A, the events are simply spaced out a bit more. Plan B also has a few other travel options. Like Plan A it also comes equipped with Plan B 2.0, that would entail a child on or shortly after the fourth year” She handed the third folder over and took a deep breath, leaning into the back of the couch.
Callie was simply stunned. She had been ready to re-convince Arizona to have kids and she had been ready to do without...but she had not prepared for Arizona to be so on board.
“Wow...you did all of this today?” She asked setting the folders on the table and taking Arizona’s hand in her own.
“I thought about it a lot yesterday after I said we would have them. Today I took a long lunch and did some of the research” she replied with a smile. “It’s no secret that I have control issues...and as it turns out trust issues; but my first plan wasn’t working out for me” She leaned in and caress Callie’s face.
“What was your first plan?”
“Live without you. It was a suck plan” Arizona said with a smile. “I know that I should have waited and we should have done all this together...but I wanted you to know that I was serious.”
Just as Callie was about to respond the timer buzzed from the kitchen. The pair stood slowly and walked over to the table. Callie dished up dinner and set it down in front of her girlfriend before sitting down next to her. Arizona leaned forward and sniffed the steaming plate, she let out a small moan in appreciation.
“This smells ah-mazing!” Arizona gushed before taking her first bite. Callie grinned and began to eat her own. She hadn’t made a real meal in weeks, without someone to cook for she had lost her desire. They ate in reasonable silence.
“Hey Cal?”
“Yes, Ari?” Callie responded with a smile.
“Do we have to decide tonight what plan we’re going to go with?” She took a drink of her wine.
“No, I’m not in any hurry. Just knowing that we have a plan together is good enough for me” Callie replied taking hold of her hand.
Arizona was quiet again as she finished eating her dinner. Callie could tell that Arizona was mulling over something in her brain. She decided the best thing to do was just wait for her to bring it up. They finished dinner and began to clean the dishes together.
“Do you really not understand squat about me?” Arizona asked suddenly. Callie had wondered if she would ask about that. She had spent part of the day trying to think of the right way to respond and now that it was time she couldn’t remember anything she had planned to say.
“Other than the fact that I over-exaggerated...no, I really don’t sometimes” Callie turned off the water and dried her hands off. She took a moment to gather her thoughts before continuing, “You’re so loving, compassionate, funny, and sweet...but you’re also a stone sometimes. It’s like...you don’t even let the bad stuff touch you.” She forcefully set her wine glass down. “We broke up. We were over...and you acted like it didn’t even matter. The only time you ever showed any emotion was...in that elevator and even then you just walked away. I just don’t get that. Every time I tried to understand, you only got angry and walked away.” Arizona could see the hurt in the dark brown eyes and she started to open her mouth to object, but Callie cut her off saying, “you tired to after George went into the military, you did on your birthday, and you did again a few weeks ago. I will never understand you if you don’t at least give me a chance” Callie reached out and took her hand in her own.
Taking a moment to process the blonde stood silently. After what seemed like hours she opened her mouth to reply, “You’re right...and you’re wrong” The dishes forgotten she pulled Callie back to the couch. “It did matter, but breaking down and crying in front of you like I did in my apartment and to Teddy everyday wasn’t going to help. I have to be strong. At first I had to be strong because kids and parents can smell fear and then I had to be strong for my parents...I guess sometimes I forget that I don’t always have to be strong with you. I certainly wasn’t strong in that room yesterday I--” Before she could continue Callie placed a finger over her lips.
“Don’t. Don’t even try and say using your body to protect that little girl wasn’t strength. You did exactly what you were supposed to do.” she removed her finger and nodded for Arizona to continue.
“I just don’t feel strong around you...I feel like I’m coming undone and that’s scary for a know-it-all Type A” Arizona said with a small smile. Callie returned the smile and leaned forward pulling her into a hug.
“You don’t have to always be strong...and I promise to never stop trying” Callie whispered. Arizona nodded her head into her shoulder. “Are we good?” Callie asked as she pulled back.
“We’re good” she whispered.
“Good” Callie began to wipe the tears from the blue eyes as well as the ones from her own. “Good because we need to talk about one other thing…” Arizona felt her stomach began to do flip flops. She wracked her brain for what else she could have said or done that they would need to talk through.
“What else is there?” She asked confusion clearly in her voice. Callie smiled broadly and pulled her body so that it was tight against her own. They sat there for a moment holding each other.
“How did you go from no kids to ten?!” Callie asked with a laugh. Hearing the question Arizona laughed as well.
“I have no idea...I just said the first number that popped into my head. Besides you said you wanted a big family!” Arizona snuggled deeper into her side and sighed in relief. Without thought the brunette pulled the nearby blanket over them both and turned on the TV.
“Big is a relative word...I was thinking more along the lines of two...maybe three. Each with ample amounts of time in-between”
“Ok...I can do that.” Arizona said with a yawn.
“We can do this.” Callie said squeezing her slightly.
“I never did thank you, for what you did yesterday. If you hadn’t been there I don’t know what I would have done” Arizona said in a small voice. Callie grasped her chin and tilted up so she was looking into her blue eyes.
“You don’t have to thank me. I did it for purely selfish reasons...I love you and I wasn’t going to let that incredibly broken man take you away from me”
“I love you too”
The TV hummed on as the pair absentmindedly watched. Laying together everything felt like it was going to be alright and for now that was enough.
