Calliope POV - Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
This was the third time I was reading my itinerary. The more I read it, the more I realized the price I was about to pay. There is a battle within. The battle involving my heart and my head. My instincts were blurred because of this unfathomable fear of loosing my relationship. I was yet again torn between what I want and what Arizona wanted.
“I know what you are thinking…” Arizona slowly kissed me on my left temple. I always get this soft sensation down my spine when she did that. It never ceased to amaze me.
“huh?...” I whispered.
“That it’s a 26 hr hour flight with two stopovers in L.A. and Dubai…” She smiled and I tried looking away because I was terrified of the thought that she might detect my true feelings through the expression in my eyes.
“It’s almost the same when I went to Botswana…” I said. I folded the itinerary and tucked it back between the middle fold of my passport.
“Yeah we have to stay a couple of days in Johannesburg before heading to Ghana. I have to present my research at the United Nations Development Program office since it is a collaborative effort with them.” She added and pulled me closer towards her. We were both seated in the boarding area.
I sighed, slowly taking in the moment.
“I think it’s a good idea. This way you can prioritize things. You can see what’s needed whether it’s disease prevention, education, or awareness. The UN can definitely direct you to the right place.” I said then glanced at my watch.
30 minutes left before we board the plane.
“The chief wasn’t happy…” I abruptly said.
“What?” Arizona replied, obviously confused.
“He was pretty bummed about my immediate resignation. He told that in order for an immediate resignation to be valid, I need to have an emergency reason. Almost life threatening. Well, it’s obvious that I don’t.” I said. Arizona’s facial expression started gradually changing.
“So, what’s gonna happen?”
“I don’t know.. I guess he’s going to have a chat with my father. He can’t do anything because I am here. It’s a done deal.” I replied to Arizona.
“Are you regretting this?” She curiously asked. I had to be careful with my response because this moment could turn sour anytime.
“Well.. I don’t. It’s done.” I quickly replied.
“Calliope listen if you have…”
“I don’t.” I interrupted hoping she would drop it. I had to convince Bailey then I had to deal with Mark. I declined his offer to drop us off at the airport because we would continue our discussion whether going to Africa was plain insanity or not.
“You’re lying.” I felt her pull away. “I know you. Th-that tone.. I know it.” She added.
“Arizona, I don’t know what else to say if that’s what you think.” I said without looking at her.
“No, you are lying.” This time her tone became stern.
“Arizona, this is not easy for me.” I said. I slowly shifted my gaze towards her. “I am proud of your recognition Arizona. I am. The chief was just surprised because he knows how passionate I am working at Seattle Grace. When you told me about Africa in the conference room, my world shook… just shook.” I bit my lower lip.
“Then why did you decide this?” Arizona was now breathing slowly. I knew this was her way of controlling her invulnerable state.
“I-I just did. Maybe without thinking but I just did. I did because.. I fear Arizona that if you move away geographically, we will just tear apart emotionally.” I ran my hands through my hair unconsciously and continued, “I’ll pay the price. I’ll pay any price, but the price of staying if you left.. I just couldn’t fathom the idea Arizona.”
She pressed her lips together revealing her endearing dimples. I waited for her response.
“You were willing to give up having kids.” She finally said.
“What?” I surprisingly replied. We were oblivious to our surrounding because of the intensity of our eye contact.
“You were willing to give up having kids just to be with me. Your savings account is still empty because of me. Calliope Torres, I know how much you love me. I know.” Arizona said. One more blink of the eye and her tears will controllably start streaming down her face.
“Arizona it’s fine.. let’s ju-“
“It’s not.” She immediately interrupted me. “How did I agree to this? you coming with me…” Arizona shook her head in disbelief.
She kissed my lips and I tasted the sweetness of her lips and the saltiness of her tears.
“Every morning when we have different schedules, you make sure I have enough hot water to shower. When it rains, I love how you wait for me because you have an umbrella in your locker and I don’t. You never complained, even once when I asked for a medical opinion from you on some of my cases.”
“Arizona.. listen” I whispered to control the quiver in my voice.
“I am taking you away. I can’t. You don’t have to do this Calliope because I know how much you will always, always love me. We can survive this. If we can survive the shooting, the drama, and our differences..we can do this.” Before I could even reply, Arizona was hugged me tight and slowly started weeping.
“Arizona, how are we going to make this work... things are bound to get in the way..” I said hugging her equally tighter.
“It won’t. Let’s promise that it won’t. I’ll call you, everyday. Or, better yet, we can use Skype so I get to see you. I will email you everyday and write you letters too.” I felt her slowly pull back.
“I love you Arizona Robbins… I love you so fucking much it makes my heart bleed.” I kissed her lips and savoured every taste of her tongue.
“Promise me Calliope… that when I am gone, you will always keep in your heart and this still means we are together.” She managed to say before I attempted to kiss her again.
“I promise Arizona Robbins… it’s always going to be you. We will have our moments and arguments but at the end of it all. It’s you. ” I gave her a long deep kiss then heard the announcement for the passengers to start boarding the flight.
