Disclaimer: I own nothing in regards to the characters of Grey's Anatomy. I don't own the songs used in this chapter either.
Background: Arizona decided not to be "all in" and wound up as part of the "cool hospital aunts". Sofia is 15 years old. Callie called in Addison for her pregnancy and Addison stayed in Seattle. Addison and Teddy became close friends which lead to them getting involved and eventually married. Mark died when sofia was 5. Author's Note: Please keep in mind while reading that this is an alternative universe. In this case, canon stopped after the first ultrasound. Therefore, Arizona never heard the heartbeat. All caught up? Enjoy!
Author's Note 2: Why oh why can't I get paid for writing fanfic? It would make my life soooo much easier ;)
DECEMBER 23
Callie entered her house through the kitchen-garage entrance, dropping her bulky purse on the counter as she made her way through her home. It was a wonderful feeling coming home to Arizona and Sofia, one that put a constant smile to her lips. She called out for the pair but was confused by the lack of response. She maneuvered her way through the large two story home to the family room, where she found them curled up together on the sofa napping. Unable to resist such an opportunity, she backed out of the room to retrieve her camera from her office.
The sound of the camera flash jerked Arizona from her slumber. "What're you doing?"
Callie handed the blonde the digital camera. "You two looked entirely too cute to not take a picture." She sat to the right of Arizona. "What are we watching?"
"Found a Daria marathon on Classic MTV."
"Is this part of that dark side you claim to have?"
"Hey! Daria is edgy."
"Pssshhht. 30 years ago maybe."
"She's totally still relevant."
"Liking a cartoon about a sarcastic bitch from the 90's does not constitute a dark side."
"Whatever." They watched the show in silence aside from occasional laughter until the commercial break.
"Oh my God!" exclaimed Callie. "They were sooooo gay."
"God, Mom, can't two girls be JUST friends without being totally hot for each other?" Sofia grumbled rubbing her eyes while sitting up on the other end of the couch.
"Do I say anything about you and Jessica?"
"I mean on tv."
"Whatever." Callie looked around the room. "I thought you wanted to go Christmas tree hunting."
"Been waiting for you to get home."
She glanced at her watch. "Ok. So tree hunting, some gift shopping, we can grab dinner somewhere along the way."
Arizona stood, refusing to look at either of the Torreses. "I need to get out of here, too." she muttered leaving the room.
Mother and daughter wore the same confused expression. "You go get ready. I'll see what crawled up her butt and died in the past two minutes." Callie said with a sigh. She walked into the kitchen where the blonde stood with her arms braced on the sink, staring out the window. She crossed the room and wrapped her arms around Arizona's waist. She nuzzled her nose against her shoulder when she felt the woman stiffen in her arms. "Why is it whenever you're here, I always wind up finding you either camped in front of my tv or in this exact spot with that...look?"
"What look?"
"Like you're a million miles away from here."
Arizona shrugged. "It seems to be where I do my best thinking."
"Ok, but must you look so grumpy when you do it?" She pressed a soft kiss below her ear. "Wanna tell me what happened in the other room?" A fair ponytail shook against her cheek.
"Not really."
"Arizona."
"It's Christmas, Calliope." the peds surgeon whispered so softly Callie almost didn't hear.
"Yes it is. I don't see what the big deal is. It comes every year at this time."
"The Colonel died on Christmas."
"Oh," Callie breathed against her neck, understanding slowly dawning. "Right. I forgot about that."
Arizona released a deep breath. "I used to love Christmas when I was little. Tim and I would argue over which tree to get and of course we always got the one I picked cuz I was older and knew just what to say. We'd go home and bicker about decorating the tree. He liked lots and lots of lights whereas I was particular about ornament placement. Then, we'd start baking cookies and making fudge. Even when I went off to college and medical school, I'd make sure I was home for Christmas so we could go through our rituals. Somehow, regardless of where he was stationed, I think probably because of our father's military ties, he always managed to get leave at Christmas. After Tim died, I went home for the holidays less often, but if I didn't go home, my parents made sure to come wherever I was. Since Dad died..." she shook her head. "And then after Mom died a few years ago...I just can't find the joy in Christmas anymore." She turned in Callie's embrace and looped her arms around the tan neck. "I love you and I love Sofia, but I can't do the Christmas tree stuff. Sure, there will be presents for both of you from Santazona, but I...I... I can't..."
Callie hugged her tightly. "Hey, shhhhh. It's ok. I get it. I'm sure Sof will understand too." She pressed a light chaste kiss to the lips in front of her. "But you're not alone, Arizona. I know it feels like it with your relatives gone, but we're your family, too. We can make new traditions or reinvent the old ones. We are together, which means we face the hard times TOGETHER which means you don't have to go through your Christmas melancholy alone. Let us be here for you like you are for us the other 363 days of the year."
The pediatric surgeon raised her eyebrows. "You realize there are 365 days in a year."
"I'm including your birthday in with Christmas."
She laughed quietly. "Ok. I think I can do that. But for this year, can you drop me off at my apartment while you and Bugs get the tree? There's something I need to do. You can pick me up on your way home."
A wide toothy smile broke across the brunette's face. "Do you realize you referred to here as home?"
"What? No I didn't."
Callie pressed Arizona's back against the sink and ran her hands up and down her side. "Yeah, you kinda did." She placed butterfly kisses over the pale jawline. "I rather like the fact that you consider this place home." Her hands travelled over the top of the blonde's Hopkins t-shirt, groping the full breasts beneath.
"God, Calliope," Arizona moaned arching closer. She ran her hands over Callie's cheeks, holding her head in place as she kissed her deeply.
"Good God, you two!" Sofia's voice from across the kitchen broke their lust-filled haze as they jumped apart. "You finally declare yourselves an official couple and suddenly decorum hops the midnight train to Georgia. Keep it in the damn bedroom!"
"Language!" They shouted in unison.
"Have you been listening to my ipod again?" Arizona added.
"I was for a little bit but your music is depressing."
"It is not. It's eclectic. Varied."
"Very VERY depressing."
Callie stood leaning against the counter, watching the pair banter. She was intrigued by this idea that Arizona only listened to depressing music. "Sofia, why don't you get Arizona's ipod and meet us at the car? Then we'll see just how bad this music really is."
Ten minutes later, the trio was on the road. Arizona fiddled with the small device and before long Dolly Parton was singing "Hard Candy Christmas". "I'm just fine and dandy..."
"It's Christmassy."
"She's putting on a brave face cuz life sucks. Shuffle." Sofia ordered.
George Jones "He Stopped Loving Her Today". "He said I'll love you til I die..."
"Shuffle!" The Torres women shouted together.
"It's a classic. Their love never ends."
"SHUFFLE!"
"You guys suck."
Lady Antebellum "Need You Now." "It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now. Said I wouldn't call but I lost all control and I need you now..."
"She's crying over a scrapbook, he's drunk, let's have a booty call. Sounds like you two." The teen commented from the backseat.
Arizona pressed shuffle without being told, her face reddening.
Green Day "When I come around." "Oh I heard you cryin' out loud, all the way across town. You've been searching for that someone and it's me out on the prowl"
"Good beat." said Callie.
Sofia rolled her eyes. "Split decision apparently."
Trent Willmon "On Again Tonight." "I'm glad you picked up the phone. Yeah, I know that we both agreed we'd leave each other alone. We're just wastin' our time..."
"Seriously, Arizona?" Callie scoffed.
George Strait "Amarillo By Morning." Amarillo by morning,up from San..."
"Next!" chorused through the car.
Celine Dion "My Heart Will Go On." "Every night..."
"Oh for the love of..."
"Please, Lord, not Titanic."
Reba McEntire "For My Broken Heart." "There were no angry words at all as we carried boxes down the hall. One by one we put them in your car..."
"NO!"
"I told you it's all depressing crap."
"I really don't like you guys right now." Arizona pouted scrolling through her playlist. "Oh. I think I got one."
"All of these lines across my face, tell you the story..."
"I know this one." Callie said with a smile. "It seems depressing at first, but it's actually very uplifting."
"But these stories don't mean anything when you've got no one to tell them to. It's true. I was made for you."
Callie reached across the console to grab Arizona's hand. "I like this song." she gave the hand a squeeze and rested them over the console.
"Wow. One song out of...well...I'm not sure how many she has on there." Sofia snarked from the back.
They let the song play through its entirety.
"A fire burns. Water comes. You cool me down..."
"Too slow!" from the backseat audio expert.
"Would you be quiet for two seconds? I'm trying to listen." said the driver.
"You know there's no need to hideaway. You know I tell the truth."
"I remember this song. We were driving back to my place after Alex and Izzie's wedding and..."
"We couldn't speak to each other because we were both a bundle of nerves. So I turned on the radio when we were like a couple blocks from your apartment."
"And this song was playing."
"Ack! Gag me with a spoon here." said Sofia rolling her eyes.
Callie pulled the car to a stop outside of Arizona's apartment building. "We'll be back in a few hours. Hopefully someone will have fixed her attitude by then."
Arizona leaned across the seat to press a soft kiss to her girlfriend's cheek. "Love you. Have fun!" She tossed a glance in the backseat. "Later gator."
"Love you."
"After awhile crocodile."

FOUR HOURS LATER
Arizona was pacing the length of her apartment, flicking her lighter repeatedly. It was something she would do whenever she was stress-smoking and since she couldn't smoke, she could still go through the motions. In this moment, her apartment rivaled a warzone. Drawers were ripped from their proper slots and lay either dangling or on the floor. Papers were all over the place. Clothes were strewn about the bedroom. "Where the hell could they be? Gotta be here somewhere." she muttered. A knock briefly interrupted her pacing. She opened the door to Callie and Sofia. "Oh. It's you two."
"Ummm who else were you expecting?" asked Sofia.
"Good Lord, Arizona. What the hell happened in here?" Callie exclaimed in shock.
"I'm looking for something. It should be here. Rather in my sock drawer. But it's not. I thought maybe I put it in a different drawer. But I've gone through ALL my drawers and it's not here it's not here. It's gotta be here." she spoke rapidly, continuing her pacing and lighter flicking.
Callie looked at the ground briefly, then turned to face her daughter. "Why don't you go wait in the car? We'll be down in a minute."
"Does this have to do with the..." Callie's gaze narrowed and she made a quick jerk of her head to indicate yes. "Oh. Right. I'll just...uhhh...go to the car then."
Callie waited for the girl to leave the room, then crossed into Arizona's pacing path. "What exactly are you looking for?"
"A box. A very specific, very special box."
"When was the last time you saw it?"
"I keep it in the back of my sock drawer. I see it all the time." Arizona bit her lower lip in thought. "Maybe I didn't put it there. I seem to remember offering it to Mark. Did he take it?"
"Arizona, Mark's been dead for ten years. I highly doubt a ghost took your box."
"Then maybe I got robbed."
"You got robbed for a box." Callie stared her down.
"You're right. It's stupid." Arizona's shoulders slumped. She had looked forward to finally presenting those rings on Christmas. For 16 Christmases she'd dreamed of giving Callie her ring and for 16 years circumstances interferred with her dream.
Callie's left eyebrow rose slightly as she took in Arizona's posture. She hated seeing the blonde like this, but she also couldn't admit she'd taken the jewelry box. A day and a half, Torres. Diversionary tactics about her missing ringbox for a day and a half. You can do it. "I'm sure whatever it is is super important and I'm sure once you calm down and wait a day or two, it'll come to you where you saw it last." She grabbed Arizona's hand. "For now, we're going to dinner."
