Irene watches them as they stand, and then kneel, and as they dry their eyes.
There's light coming from the far wall, beyond the rose, the white light of a door like the one she'd brought them through.
Slowly they rise up, Alain lifting Susannah, and they pass through, and it's gone. They're gone.

She jerks her head, shaking tears out of her eyes. "Excuse me?"
A handsome, powerfully built young black woman--an Amazon, in point of fact--dressed for business, has appeared at her elbow.
"May I help you?"
"My name is Irene Tassenbaum," she says, and feels a certain grim satisfaction at the way her expression changes; enough satisfaction to press further. "And actually you could help me. I'd like an address or phone number where I can get in touch with a Miss Charlie McGee, please."
