Well dang, that sounds like such a fascinating premise. Unfortunately, all too often the premise of SF turns out to be much more interesting than the execution. Still, I might give this a shot someday. I've not read anything by McDevitt yet.

I've been reading Joe Hill's story collection "Twentieth Century Ghosts". I'm a fan of his writing, although I failed to get far with "Heart Shaped Box". I intend to return to it, but I really was not in the mood for that style of horror at the time. I think that is a problem with me with the horror genre in general, I have to read it with my armor on.

Greg's a big fan of Joe Hill (who I later found out was Stephen King's son, which is kind of cool that he's not capitalizing on his dad's name to make his own), and I've read Hill's comic book series Locke & Key which is really good. So far, I'm enjoying Heart-Shaped Box.

It doesn't hurt to give McDevitt a try, though you may want to read the first chapter at the store before spending the money on it. I think there's other of his titles that rate higher on Amazon. Wikipedia has a list of all his books and where they are in the series if that helps. :)

I've given McDevitt more than one try. I find his books decent until the non-end. Nothing is ever solved. He builds up this great question throughout the book and then refuses to tie it together and answer it. I hate his books for that and won't read them.

Robert Sawyer is another scifi author I dislike. He sets up a big question and then procedes to take all the soul out of it. He's an athiest and all his books, no matter how good, tend to reflect this.

I'll dip into my scifi collection and try to recommend some that you might like. Have you read any Sherri S. Tepper? She's a cross between fantasy and scifi.

I've been eying Tepper, but I haven't gotten around to her lately. I'm not a fan of Sawyer either--I've only tried one of his books, but you're right, what little I read had no soul.

As a general rule, I do like SF, but lately it's not been doing anything for me at all.
