I read about the first 100 pages of this one, and it was one of those books where even though it was ultimately Not For Me, I could totally see what people liked about it.
I've finished the second one (Dragonfly in Amber) now, and I've bought Voyager, Drums of Autumn and The Fiery Cross.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes will be available in mpb in December, and I'll get that then - I expect I'll have all the others read by then. (I read too many books to be able to afford tpb editions if there's a mpb edition available.)
It's an interesting decision, whether series straight through versus reading one volume and then taking a break. Some series, when I discover them, I go right out and read all of them - for instance, I've just read four Catherine Asaro books in a row (Schism, The Final Key, The Radient Seas and Ascendant Sun and I'm partway through the fifth (Spherical Harmonic). And before that I read the first three volumes of Naomi Novik's Temaraire series in a row
( ... )
With most series, I do have to take a break. I know I went out and bought all of Martin's after I finished the first, but I couldn't read them, and haven't yet. Part of it is needing to absorb it, and the other was that his writing style (writing epic fantasy to boot) was so different from how I was trying to write, yet his style kept infecting my prose.
I really wanted to keep reading the rest of the (then) Kushiel trilogy when I finished reading Kushiel's Dart, but I didn't, because I knew I'd get way too sucked in. But I had the books on me, so I could've if I'd really wanted to. :)
But there's been other books I've had to read straight through, so I definitely see what you're saying. :)
I've been in love with these books for years, and I'm always excited to see someone else sucked into Gabaldon's cult! She's an amazing POV author, and her characters and world-building are immense and superb.
I just can't imagine trying to stretch these books out, though. I read through them as fast as I could get my hands on them, then I went back and read them again. And again. They're that god. I actually had no idea that A Breath of Snow and Ashes *wasn't* the last one, so now you've gotten me all excited about the series again!
Gah! There's so much to say, but I can't! You haven't even *met* my favourite characters yet!
