I'm familiar with Jane Lindskold mostly through her co-writing with Roger Zelazny, and this is one I haven't heard of. Betwixt and Between sounds very like some of the sidekick characters in Lord Demon, which is a Zelazny/Lindskold, and one of my favorites of his! So I'll have to look this one up.

Huh, a Zelazny co-writer, eh? My daughter and I have been reading her wolf series (damn if I can bring up the titles; tired brain) which are lovely fantasies about the intelligent Royal animals and a well-realized human world and its different cultures. These are pretty current writings.

This was her first written book, but not first published. I'm not sure how it compares with her later work, cause I haven't read it. :)
